National Security Issues and Terrorism

Defining Terrorism

Academicians/Scholars, security gurus, journalists and politicians, use several kind of definition of terrorism. The term terrorism can be defined in various versions depending on how one views or imagines terrorism to be. According to Ganor Boaz (2001) a number of definitions center on the terrorists associations’ modes of operation while others stress the enthusiasm and characteristics of terrorism, “the modus Operandi of individual terrorists.” Individual definitions of terrorism can be traced in Boaz’s survey on the book “Political Terrorism” where there are 109 different terrorism definitions. Some define terrorism as an act of massive destruction of lives and property aimed for vengeance or retaliation. According to the U.S Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, 2002-2005), there is no generally accepted definition of terrorism.

Terrorism gets defined in accordance to federal bylaws as “the unlawful use of force and violence against individuals or properties to coerce the civilian population or government or any other segment present in a bid to further political or social goals”. Brian Jenkins defines terrorism as “the use or in jeopardy use of force to bring about political change”. Basing on a how a county’s code of law terrorism definition, U.S code of law defines terrorism as premeditated, politically influenced violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subgroupings or agents.  Whitaker Brian (Mon 7th, 2001) defined terrorism basing on the state department definition as; “premeditated, politically influenced violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subgroups of people or agents”. The States government still holds the same definition since as mentioned earlier there in no generalized definition of terrorism. Any premeditated form of violence aimed at individuals or civilian population, which is noncombatant by some dangerous people.
