The Need to Safeguard Our Food

Organizations advocating for food safety such as Safe Tables Our Priority (STOP) should receive a large amount of government grants as the initiatives they have established are vital in enhancing food safety in US. Consumer Union in Washington was the first to develop the idea of safeguarding food. This was to prevent common contamination that might result to infections as well as diseases. Later Eric joined the union for the campaign of keeping food safe. His book fast food nation’ talks on how individuals should safe keep food to avoid contamination. According to Eric, consumers should buy foods organizations that meet requirements given by legislation. STOP organization should get grants in order to establish a measure on food safety. This is one way of reducing contamination and monitor food safety, (Tichi, 411).

Eric’s book fast food nation’ emphasize on how to safe keep foods. The author focuses on meatpacking industry where he arrives to a given conclusion. This and other food related industries dominated by contaminations hence organizations should be developed in order to look at such situations. After analyzing several organizations that deal with direct consumable foods, the author pinpoints out on ways to improve food for end use. While dealing with foods and other products, most organizations engage in activities that are hazardous hence not fit for consumers. Food in most organizations exposes something that creates the danger of contamination hence poor for human consumption, (Schlosser, 334).

“Until recent, meatpacking industry operated under an environment that developed problems on products they offer to consumers. In 2002 more, than 18 million pounds of meat related products were contaminated hence unfit for human consumption, (Tichi, 2009)”. According to statistics, nearly half of the US population consumed the products. This translates that those who consumed those products become affected hence there was a need to establish organizations to take care of safety issues. The government needs to release grants to organizations such as STOP to take control over food safety issue and ways to handle food. The meatpacking industry had failed in controlling the issue of safety hence nearly all food products delivered to consumers was not safe for consumption, (Tichi, 250).

With different problems on the quality of meat delivered to market, the government was to take an action in order to ensure meat provided to the consumer was quality. The government decided to take legal test on the quality of meat, but meatpacking industry intervened and refused the idea of testing meat. This was a clear indication that meatpacking industry had to some point failed to provide quality products to customers. “In 1993, the government entered in the world of quality where it developed an idea of testing meat on the ground before delivered to consumers, (Schlosser, 2010)”. Since this idea did not fully solve the idea of quality and safety towards food, the government should give grants to the organization in order to develop a system that help monitor proper delivery of quality foods to the market?  STOP should get the grant from the government in order to monitor what customers get, (Schlosser, 288).

Research shows that nearly over eighty thousand customers get affected by contaminated meat where a third dies out of something that was preventable. Lack of proper storage and poor environmental condition of slaughterhouse also create infections that lead to death. In order to reduce the level of infections per year, the government should give grants to STOP to facilitate all control system hence ensure that consumers are safe towards consumption of food products provided? Apart from pathogen infection, Eric’s research revealed that nearly 1.5 million people in and outside America get infected by Salmonella. A ground test on meat used by consumers found that most restaurants and fast food places sold meat that was unsafe for consumer use. The reason behind this was that USDA report arrived late two weeks after meat consumed. Symptoms of vomiting and blood gave a conclusion that the meat released for consumption was unsafe. With the help of USDA, the government had to recall the unconsumed meat and do some testing. Instead of such frustrations, safety organizations should get grants and left to control and monitor all the issues that touch all matters of quality, (Tichi, 214).

Research shows that meatpacking industry has failed in monitoring food safety simply because most of the operations carried in this industry always develop issues that create injuries at the end. STOP requires grant in order to monitor and control the environment of food safety and storage in order to reduce the number of infections per year. Workers working condition is another area that develops problems with issues of food safety. In order to serve a larger number of customers, workers tend to work faster. The speed used in serving customers make workers loss blood due to poor working, conditions hence contaminate meat and meat products provided to customers, (Schlosser, 301).

Eric’s visit to areas of slaughterhouse found that the entire drainage system directed to town where there were people. Different types of odors from the area affected people in different ways. Safety organizations should get grants from the government in order to establish a system to monitor such aspects. “As a result of odors, residents near slaughterhouses developed problems of the respiratory system and other issues such as headaches. In general, the conditions at slaughterhouses were negligent, (Tichi, p. 190)”.

Workers in meatpacking and slaughter section are not qualified. Operating with unqualified workers generates poor results hence services and products delivered to customers tend to be of low quality or infected. Competition in meatpacking industry force workers work faster in order to serve hundred of customers. The need to safeguard food is vital simply because workers tend to use illegal means in ensuring that right products get to the hands of customers. Research shows that the current world of meatpacking encounters serious problems compared to past, (Schlosser, 280).

Different safety organizations such as STOP are in the market in order to fight against poor conditions that develop infections. The government should fully support safety organizations with enough money to develop effective systems and approaches to handle quality issues.
