The meeting was called to order at 10am and started with a word of prayer led by Mrs. Alston who is the teachers’ representative.
Minute 1: Reading of last months minutes
The minutes of the last meeting which was held at September 14, 2010 were read by the secretary Mr. Brown. They were confirmed to be the actual minutes by one of the parents Mr. Matthew who was seconded by Mrs. Joyce who is a member of the staff.
Minute 2: Treasurers Report/Audit
The treasurer Ms. Bowser gave a report of the financial spending of the year 2010. The balance as at February 1, 2011 was $3,397.74. There was a cookie sale project going on and the funds from it were $7,967.50. The amount given to Lakewood PTA amounted to $1,593.27 which was the total the Lakewood Elementary School received. In total the company received $4,695.00. $85.96 was used to award those who had the highest sales. She confirmed the report had been audited by a renown audit firm which approved that the spending report was true. This been a critical issue many parents were curious to know what was the estimated budget of the year and how much was spend and remained. They also wanted to know the on going projects and how much they would cost them as parents and if they were worthy. All these issues were clarified with intervention of the school headteacher and the parents were satisfied. The parents were to sponser funds for an African American Night festival during the month of February.
Minute 3: Field day Volunteers
There was to be a field day event whereby the members discussed and concluded that the event will be voluntary. This was due to avoid straining parents who had many activities to undertake.
Minute 4: Budget Addendum
The members discussed in depth the budgetary allocations for the year where they gave priority to the pending projects. The parents urged the administration to act first an make sure that the projects which had been started were completed at appropriate time.
Minute 5: Upcoming Events
The members agreed to hold a parents breakfast party which was to be held when the students break for vacation. The money to be used during this event was to be drawn from the school kitty and the treasurer confirmed that there were enough funds to hold the event. There was also talent/fashion show which was to be held during second term. The members agreed that professionals in different fields should be invited to advice the students on careers. The parents were notified that the parents about an EOG to their children which was ongoing. In line with this the president was to liaise with Ms. Muhammad in order to fix a date during the month of March. She will also take the responsibility of calling the DPS to get someone who will present during the stated forum.
Minute 6: Teacher Appreciation
Teachers were appreciated by the members for the exemplary work they were doing in preparing the students for life in future. The parents expressed their gratitude to the teachers and offered to sponsor them for trip for one week to the city where they will visit several companies to learn and spend good time in the good hotels. This was to take place during the coming vacation to avoid interruption of the studies.
The next meeting was scheduled for August 2, 2011.
The meeting ended at 5:30 pm with a word of prayer led by Mrs. Alston.
