Philosophy of Education
I believe all children have the capability to be better individuals in the society. Each of the students that are enrolled in our school is unique with their own distinct strengths and weaknesses. It is the teachers and the administration responsibility to thus ensure that the strengths of the students are nurtured and brought out while the weaknesses are eradicated from the child life. The school will be a place where the child receives the optimum environment to grow and mature physically, socially, mentally and intellectually (Pathak, 2007).
Overall, the child will have developed all rounder thus becoming a better individual in the society. Education will be focused on ensuring that students in a class move from one step to another at an equal pace. Some student may be fast and easily grasp different concepts taught in class.
Others may be slow and thus require repetition of various concepts numerous times. Teacher will thus note and separate the fast learner and the slow learners. Slow learners will be assigned extra tutoring so as to catch up and be at per with the first learners. Group work will also be encouraged where the slow and fast learners are integrated in one group.
Through integration, they will be able to share and discuss information with the fast learners helping the slow learners in areas where they have been left behind. Regardless of the distinction between the fast and slow learners the school will strive to create an environment where student labeling does not occur. Labeling of students e.g. slow learners may demoralize determined students from excelling. Students will be taught on the essence of accepting that people are different from each others and strengths and weaknesses vary.
As the school principle I desire to establish an environment that is safe for the children, allows for the children to safely experiment on their curiosity and discuss and share idea. In such an environment students will be able to learn, critically think over different issues and become more intelligent. This approach at education will mean that the schools curriculum will be affected in various ways. First, the teacher’s role will change from simply being instructional and impacting students with knowledge to include that of being a guide (Pathak, 2007).
The role of the teacher will be all rounder integrating the role of the teacher as the educator, the teacher as the counselor and the teacher as the friend of the child. By creating such a close relationship between the teacher and the students, education will be enhanced. The teacher will have better understanding of his or her students and guide them in academic and social aspects of their lives. Similarly, the students will be open to the teachers thus comfortably discussing various issues that may affect them.
Other than instructional material from the teacher the curriculum will be modified to set time aside from private studies. Studies will be given to seek information through studying on their own. Accessibility of other sources of information rather than the teachers will be made easy. The school library will for instance be stocked with up to date relevant books in various fields of studies. Through this extra study time the students will be able to seek answers to queries that they could have been holding on their minds.
Provision of hand on activities such as group discussions and debates will also improve on the students learning and knowledge (Pathak, 2007). Hands on activities and personal studies enable students to reinforce the knowledge they had initially gathered in class as the students will get an opportunity to engage in individual knowledge seeking and discovery.
Coming from a diverse community, the curriculum will also change to accommodate the students who consider English as a second language. Oral and written classes will be undertaken by students whose first language is not English. Early introductory classes for English learners will be essential. English is the instructional language as well as the language of communication in school. Learning English will thus be essential in promoting excellent performance in class and overall school performance.
Students will also be encouraged to express themselves in English. The school will create an atmosphere of always trying till one succeeds. Student using English as a second language will at all time be encouraged to express themselves in the English language. By making errors and being corrected, the student will gradually learn how to speak fluently.
Our school strives to churn graduates that are go getters and confident on the abilities. Students whoa re determined to venture into the competitive world and make a difference in their societies and surrounding communities. We also expect to have graduates who learned something new in all aspects. Other than receiving academic knowledge, we expect the graduates to have sharpened other skills such as effective critical thinking and decision making. We also expect to have graduates equipped with leadership skills that will be nurtured from the early years of the student’s life in our school.
