Phonics
Dissertation Discussion #1
Whole language reading instruction is about exposing children to writing activities, children literature, and activities in communication within the whole reading curriculum. Phonics instructions on the other hand is the direct and sequential teaching mode for children to master what they read and enable them to organize well what they read. This for example, is teaching on the sound productions that differentiate letters like b and p, d and t and so on.
For the past one decade teachers and parents have been in conflict over one approach being the best over the other but what they fail to realize is the fact that both approaches are beneficial to the reading process of children. This is because one approach complements the other; thus resulting to an effective way of teaching reading. Educators should therefore, utilize both approaches in classroom instruction. Educators should encourage teaching phonics and its used in every day reading activities.
The phonics approach is mainly important in the beginning stage of reading instruction. The main advantage of phonics instruction is that it promotes a child’s independent reading. The advantage of combining whole language learning and phonics is that it avoids boredom and at the same time enchases reading where children can learn a lot of new vocabularies.
Dissertation Discussion #2:
The administrator has the role of providing support in ensuring the success of the reading program. He acts as the instructional leader in determining the extent which the learning program would be implemented and would become effective. The administrator acts as a role model and leader of positive reading which acts as inspiration for students to succeed in the learning program. I would therefore, expect an administrator to support the implementation of a new learning program in a school.
