In the play, a rare mysterious creature is represented by the unicorn. Laura is symbolized by the glass unicorn. Laura has a tendency of not submitting to reality and that is why when in an uncomfortable situation, she tends to disintegrate to pieces. As a result of her disability, Laura feels pushed away from other people and she does not appreciate her uniqueness, like the unicorn. It can hence be said that the unicorn represents Laura in the play.

In this play, the entire glass menagerie has great symbolic significance. According to Kirszner et al. (2004), a majority of the objects and settings have an assigned meaning in the play. However, it is good to note that the various characters in the play are used as symbols more prominently than the various scenery inanimate pieces. A look at Amanda, Wingfield family as well as Laura gives an impression of a distinct stereotype for each of the character. This represents the most prominent symbolism throughout the entire play.
The menagerie of glass animals as well as the Victrola are the two identifying symbols of Laura. Laura’s refusal to submit to reality is represented by the Victrola. The times Laura chooses to play a record on this item are basically inappropriate and hence it appears as if she does not play these records to entertain herself.
Though a little bit complex, the glass menagerie is a symbol of Laura’s freedom from the reality. If either Laura or the glass menagerie is subjected to any kind of stress after being removed from their comfort zone, they will inevitably break.
