The interaction between humans and machine is the latest addition to the term computer literacy in the 21st Century. It is expected that the concept of literacy will not only refers to the conventional; ability to read, write and express one self but will also include the ability to interpret the multimedia in terms of formulation, understanding and creation of messages so as to enhance communication. It will involve the ability to manipulate visual, aural as well as physical elements like words.
Programming literacy however is the most crucial important key in determining the literacy levels in the 21st century. Programming literacy is the ability to apply a digital technology so as to satisfy one’s needs. The world of today has enabled us to rely on various machines to meet our basic daily need and it would therefore be important if we are able to manipulate these machines to satisfy these needs. In the near future therefore computer programming will be a basic need in our daily lives and it will be a pre-requisitefor all human beings to have the basic programming skills. Programming languages such as HTML, Java, XML, PHP and C++ will be a required knowledge so as to effectively operate the machines that will also be installed with such computer languages (Prensky, 2010)[1].
Is the use of computer programming knowledge as a grading system for literacy possible or is it a fallacy? In the world we live in today we are unconsciously interacting with machines that are in use of computer programming and the possibility of all individuals learning the language as a basic skill is therefore possible. How difficult are the programming languages? Over time the programming language, as it increases in the popularity of usage, it will become simplified due to the increasing need to show rather than explain the concept of computer programming. Is computer programming therefore a prerequisite for literacy? It is important to instil the knowledge of computer programming from a tender age in children as the computer technology continues to be advanced (Prensky, 2010)[2].
