What is a work breakdown structure?
In any given structure, there are plans on how activities will be accomplished. Work breakdown structure (WBS) is defined as a work model on how the project will be accomplished. The model is organized in a hierarchical aspect where all activities are arranged in order of importance. The work of a work breakdown structure is to provide an overview of what the project intends to accomplish in a given duration. Most project managers prefer using WBS simply because it helps form or develop a basis of the project. Without WBS, most managers find it difficult to coordinate and organize their projects. A work breakdown structure should help the manager determine if the projects activities are on the right direction. This is because WBS shows the time required completing an activity, the amount of work for a particular project, and the cost allocated for the activity. In other words, work breakdown structure can be defined as the operative basis of a given project simply because it provides the entire overview of what the projects entails and requires. Some components of WBS include project scheduling, project controlling, cost planning, project planning, and capacity planning among others, (Nguyen, 2011).
What is responsibility assignment matrix?
Responsibility assignment matrix is also known as linear responsibility chart or RACI matrix. It is a model that describes participation roles of different activities within an organization. Evidence shows that responsibility assignment matrix gives the project manager or the management outlines activity within the project plan. In a cross functional project or department, this matrix helps in clarifying and defining roles of different aspects involved in the situation. Most managers and organizations prefer using responsibility assignment matrix in their projects. This tools help in defining duties and responsibilities to each and every member involved in the project. Without this matrix model, in most cases project managers fail to manage the work because they cannot trace who is responsible for what and at what time. In order to prevent such situations, an organization that wants growth uses the matrix for the purpose of assigning and monitoring work progress. With the help of responsibility assignment matrix, the project manager finds it’s easy to trace work progress simply because each and every team member follows what he is assigned to do, (Heldman, 2011).
How are they related?
Work breakdown structure and responsibility assignment matrix are two necessary components in a project or an organization. Responsibility assignment matrix is part of work breakdown structure simply because it gives an overview of roles and duties of the project team members. Without proper WBS and RAM, the project manager finds it technical to achieve project goals. Evidence shows that the two components of a project helps monitor, implement, and control the project thus they are necessary. A work breakdown structure defines how team members of the project should accomplish their tasks. It is through such definition the responsibility matrix gives out duties and tasks to each team member. Both components are useful because they help the company develop and realize its goals and objectives, (Bowen, 2011).
