Project Management
Project Management
Nature of the Project and the Key Objectives
Approval request for the Freezeland air lines to operate the three new routes was the major concern. These routes are operated by Small Island and inland carriers which feed some of the Freezeland’s international flights. The small carries carry light cargo, mails and the passengers. A large number of International passengers connecting flights to Southville rely on these small carriers. The arrangement of schedules between Freezeland air lines and these small local carriers has not been effective since the passengers arriving using the Freezeland air lines have not been in a position to book tickets for the local carriers before their arrival and, therefore, inconveniencing them upon arrival. The number of tourists had increased, in the north, during their holiday and, therefore, need for more passenger, cargo and mail carrier services to enable them to book seats and arrive at their destinations without inconveniences.
The objective, therefore, is for the Freezeland air lines to operate on the three new routes, and, therefore, be able to have a market advantage since an airline which offer planned connectivity schedules are marketable.
Key Problem(S) in this Project and the Strategies Used to Address These Problems
There was no tangible progress set for the Freezeland air lines to operate on the three new routes initially dominated by the inconvenient small carriers, and managers of the Freezeland air lines were, therefore, disappointed. The managers, therefore, investigated the causes of the delays, and they concluded that authorization of the CASE scheme should have been done with project status and a project manager could be appointed to organize, plan, and drive this project to its end. Only a few managers in the Freezeland airlines had been informed or consulted about the project proposed, and there was no combined or determined consensus to make the project succeed. Therefore, the management body did not own the project as a whole or feel totally committed to it. The supporting data was lacking. For example, existing traffic volumes information and the generated revenues on the relevant routes was very unreliable. The data obtained from the conducted traffic counts by the company on the destinations for over the 3-week period, was disappointing, and it was even suggesting to some managers that the whole project would be financially unviable. It was against the idea that there were no corrections to be made for seasonal variations and that the observations were made during a slack period.
The Freezeland Airline managers were distracted by other issues, and their attention was diverted from the project. In the past years, a lot of changes such as the introduction of a new type of aircraft had been endured by the company. Significant operational challenges came in, which, in addition to the day-to-day normal, demands of airlines operations, implied limited management time, and their attention was pulled in many directions. The most serious problem, therefore, was a failure to appoint a proficient manager to take charge of this project, and up to date, there is no clear mandate which has been given to anyone to take this project to its conclusion.
How Failure to Appoint, a Proficient Project Manager, Affect This Project
Failure to appoint a proficient project manager to take charge of the Freezeland Airline project lead to the project failure to be implemented, but it came to a standstill, without going to its intended conclusion. Lack of good project management techniques and the best information used in making a recommendation to the board was experienced by the company, and the board did not support the initiative proposed with confidence.
