Property offence is that offence that destroys the property of another person. Property offense can apply in separate classification of crimes. The first is the offense committed on the property of another person or against the property of another person. Some of the examples of property crimes include vandalism, arson, trespassing, breaking, and loitering. These are examples of property crimes that involve damage done to property. The other classification of the offense includes robbery, embezzlement, shoplifting, burglary, and armed robbery (Goldstone, D 2001). The penalty that usually associated to this charges normally depend on the value of goods that were stolen. Most of the property offenses usually classified as serious felonies, and they sometimes carry prison sentences. Felony property offenses have an average prison sentence of 3.5 years (Goldstone, D 2001).


Burglary crime is a class of property offense. This can defined as breaking into the property of another person with the intention of committing a crime therein. Residential burglaries are normally likely to be charged as felonies, and they usually classified as serious felonies. This is so incase people were at the dwelling during burglary time. Commercial building burglary is normally less serious; thus, resulting to misdemeanor charges (Goldstone, D 2001). This is so unless the building is under the list of businesses where under the law they receive greater protection. Commercial building burglary is classified as a felony if it is a break into a business like a pharmacy of bank. Burglary offense average sentence is 2.5 years in prison.


Robbery is the act of taking another person’s property through the use threat of force or force. The prison sentence for robbery is longer than burglary. This is because of the trauma and comparative risk to the victim. Most robberies usually involve weapon; thus, making the robbery a crime that is more serious. For robbery, the average sentence is almost 6.5 years and may be more if a person had multiple convictions (Goldstone, D 2001).


Theft and larceny is property crime that encompasses a wide variety of criminal activities. It refers to shoplifting, virtually taking property from another person or business, or stealing that occurs during robbery or burglary. Writing of fraudulent checks and other types of frauds classified under theft. These offenses vary and also their sentences vary too. The sentence for theft and larceny is over 2.5 years almost the same as burglary sentence. In motor vehicle theft, the average sentence is 18 months in the state court and 11 years, in the federal court.


Arson is also a class of property offence, which involves the destruction of property instead of intrusion or theft. This is offense that normally considered as the most serious of all crimes in most jurisdictions. Estimates of property loss as a result of arson are more than $2 billion every year (Goldstone, D 2001). The average sentence for this crime in the federal court is more than 7 years. This offence is not usually charged in conjunction with other crimes. For example, arson normally committed in support of an insurance fraud scheme, attempting to kill, or destroying evidence. This crime also classified as hate offence depending on the motivation and nature of the offense. Sentencing of property crimes varies and the circumstances that impact the sentencing of the crimes also varies.
