Identify a research topic.

In every research, choosing of the topic is the first thing to be done, and researcher needs to be flexible conceptualization of the research problem, and it be started with a broad idea and be prepare to narrow it down they proceed with the search. The researcher should ensure the topic chosen  researched and not narrow, and  this can be achieved by conceptualization and by being flexible and broad when starting.

Secondary sources review by the researcher to get topic overview.

This facilitates a researcher to have an overview of what is known about the research topic and specific places that a researcher can find literature reviews like journals, Educational Research, Harvard Educational Review, Psychological Bulletin and books.

Developing a search strategy

The research need to develop a search strategy by;

Identifying Preliminary Sources which includes databases and indexes in that in contains bibliographic information, abstracts, and sometimes full text articles for a wide range of topics, Identifying primary research journals in that some might contain articles that are related to   researcher’s topic of research and Personal networking where researcher need to consult other researchers doing some similar work in areas related to the research topic and this assist the researcher to reveal sources that he was unaware  like  unpublished research reports, and provide a researcher light  of what he is expected  to  work  on throughout the research process.

Involvement of community members- it is important for a researcher to enter a community as this facilitates combination of self-knowledge with cultural knowledge and skills thus enhances research development and evaluation will focus and  identify questions, interventions, decisions making  relating to design, samples, measures, collection of data, analysis and interpretation.

Conduct the search

Conducting the search assist the researcher in making search for preliminary sources, checking table of contents, reference lists and abstracts. Accessing the databases gives the researcher variety of choices for searching like title, abstract, full text, and author, subject that are relevant to research the matter.

Obtain the full text, reference

Because many journal articles and books are now available online in full text versions and the researcher cannot obtain the article in this manner, it would be better for the researcher to good to check the list of holdings at the library and if it happens that they are not available, the researcher may avail himself of an inter library loan service and  provide complete bibliographic information and the  library officer will locate their availability from other libraries  and make the request and usually it  cost implication.

Read make notes and prepare bibliographic information of each article.

Once the researcher has the article in hand, the researcher should read the document to determine if it is really what he wants and if he finds that the document is relevant to the research topic and researcher should take record of information related to bibliography of each article.

This can either manually or done electronically and it the researcher, and if the researcher do not have access to this electronic resource, then he can keep the information about bibliography on note cards or word process document as it is crucial ensure all the information needed should be recorded and that the researcher will not look for the document when writing up the literature review.

Evaluate the research reports.

It is helpful to researchers to evaluate research reports in that it gives a researcher broad spectrum of knowledge of research types and studies number with similar research approaches. Researcher is encouraged to identify full text research articles that relate to research area of interest.

Synthesize your findings.

Organization of the study is very important before   the synthesis  of research as it makes  easier for the researcher to approach the synthesis stage in that the framework might delete, add, or categorize as researcher go through the review process.

Conceptual framework gaining and formulation of  research hypothesis,  questions,  or both by literature review.

Statistical synthesis serves as a basis for the literature section of a research proposal or report. It is important for the researcher during the proposal stage  know  that an  institution or  sponsoring agency have its  proposal writing guidelines, and it is better checked with other  sources before continuing with the   writing process. Researcher must be aware that research synthesis helps him or her get ideas they will sell to any committee of research, institutional research review board, or donor agency, and this makes it clear why the research is important.

The conceptual framework is like the chicken-or-the-egg controversy as it influences  the planning and conducting of the literature review, and  if a researcher maintains an open mind  till completion  of  process of literature review, a  well thought  and  modified conceptual framework should emerge.
