Reflection on Personal Growth as a Teacher

Change, and positive change for that matter are the only connector between the current undesired state and the desired future state. The only personal drive for change is, first the acceptance of current dissatisfaction. This builds a wish to initiate change. It is a risk taking affair that also requires adequate courage. Change initiation is all about adoption of new and better strategies of doing things so as to attain or maintain a competitive edge. It is a constant process in anyone’s or anything’s life span. One has to consider properly planning for change and implementation of  change. Once there is a clear identity of things to change, formulate a means on how to change them and stick to it. This comes to the realization by cutting down anxiety and effectively forecasting targets. The crucial skill to employ so as to initiate change is that of enhancing a complete overhaul in the strategy, structures, systems, persons involved, and in some cases, the culture. Procedurally, the degree of hardship needs to be keenly assessed. Proper planning then follows closely. One also needs to do a speed assessment on how they can enhance personal change. The next step is to determine the hierarchical direction of change. Once all the above succeeds, implementation begins. This involves clear determination of key implementers and allocation of sufficient time frame. The rules and norms that also guide change have to be properly outlined in order to lead the process to its success.


As a teacher, first identify the driving forces of change. This helps you to sustain the change process. These driving forces could be internal or external. Change may also experience resisting forces. A teacher’s strength would be thus to identify these possible resistance forces and address them among his or her subjects of change. Proper communication is the most common strategy that a teacher can use to address resisting forces. This involves provision of sufficient information to your subjects on the importance of change. This will help one to win his or her subject’s support. Communication, therefore, helps to eliminate or reduce fear. The other strategy would be to involve your subjects in the process of planning and that of implementation of the said changes. People find it easier supporting that which they have been involved as members.  A teacher then takes the lead by ensuring a credible and trustworthy process. Negotiations before, during and after the process are also vital in order to tackle any emerging issues. In conclusion, a teacher should, have additional information about the future and keep checking on the progress of the change. Evaluation is a skill that will help in evaluating the failure or success of the desired change. This normally happens after the elapse of a specified time that had been scheduled as a possible timeframe for realization of change. Success is when the desired status is realized in the subjects of change while failure is manifested through lack of desired outcomes. A strict adherence to the laid down process, however, yields a success. Teachers should be always at the war-front in spearheading change among their subjects. That way, the society shifts to a more comfortable and lovely status.
