Relief Organizations’ Intervention and Postvention.

 Introduction

Table of Contents

Relief organizations are charitable non profit bodies that offer aid in emergency cases to affected individuals and communities. The goals of relief organizations are centered on philanthropic principles. These organizations perform educational, charitable, religious and other activities meant to serve the common good of mankind. These organizations provide aid in the occurrence of disasters. These organizations co-ordinate with other local forces such as the police and fire department in providing voluntary relief to relief victims, workers and the families of victims affected natural or manmade disasters.

There are various relief organizations in America; some of these relief bodies include the American association of disaster response network and the American Red Cross. The APA’s disaster response network uses its professional counselors to help the affected individuals in disasters to cope with their traumatic experiences. It employs counseling skills to provide relief to the victims as well as the relief workers. Disaster victims and relief workers have to cope with hard times and traumatic experiences, and thus; APA intervenes by offering psychological support to the victims and aid workers (The American Red Cross, 2010).

Unlike APA the American Red Cross provides more than psychological aid to victims of disaster. This body provides relief supplies such as food, temporary shelter, logistical documentation and recording in disaster cases as well as psychological aid. The organization’s goals aim to alleviate the pain and suffering that occurs in disasters. It recognizes the fact that in disasters, most victims lack basic needs that can help them as they try to get back to their normal lives. The organizations strategy highly values provision of basic needs that enhance humane conditions in disaster as well as provision of psychological counseling (The American Psychological Association, 2010).
