Selection of Measurement Tools for Research and Research Resources

  Introduction

Measurement tools can be termed as instruments that are utilized by practitioners and researchers to help in the evaluation of various variables exhibited by patients/subjects selected for research or those undergoing treatment. These variables range from psychosocial analysis to physical functioning assessments. These instruments differ in format, and may take forms such as informal/formal observations or formal questionnaires.

In designing any research project careful considerations have to be undertaken in the selection of a measurement tool. This will ensure the selected tool clearly and accurately measures the phenomenon under observation. Firstly, the researcher should determine his/her needs and find out the tests that can be applicable in measuring the variable under observation. Secondly, the variable is defined and assessed on how narrow or wide it can be. Thirdly, the researcher should determine whether the variable is measurable or not. Thereafter, the researchers should select a tool that can fit well with the data to be collected and allow ease in the analysis process (Health links, 2010).

The Cochrane database/library is a group of databases with information in healthcare and medicine. The collection is available courtesy of the Cochrane collaboration as well as other various organizations. Amongst its important collections in the Cochrane reviews which consist of systematic reviews as well as meta-analyses. These reviews interpret and summarize medical research results (The Cochrane library, 2010).

The Cochrane database can be handy in any group research because it can be used as a key resource that facilitates provision of evidence based research results and practice. The Cochrane research reviews can also be used designing personal or group research by using frameworks already used and established as being functional in certain research circumstances. Therefore, apart from being an important resource it can also be used in research design (The Cochrane library, 2010).
