Societal Discrimination-Latino, Asian and Hispanic Americans.
Societal Discrimination-Latino, Asian and Hispanic Americans.
Introduction
Discrimination entails unfairly treating other people or groups of people on the basis of preconceived judgments and prejudice. These preconceived judgments are usually made without supportive evidence, and are not easy to alter despite the presentation of evidence indicating the contrary. Racial discrimination in The United States of America is a historical aspect to reckon that has presented a grave social problem in the U.S. The minority groups consisting of Latinos, Hispanics, Asians and Blacks have borne the brunt of societal discrimination.
The Mexicans consisting of Latinos and Hispanics have continuously endured numerous kinds of negative stereotyping which has been circulating within popular culture and media. Discrimination against Mexicans (Hispanics and Latinos) has been based on culture, race, poverty, ethnicity and the use of their language-Spanish. This group of minorities has the largest group of illegal immigrants in America, and as a result; the group has been the target of most immigration raids. The great depression period experienced discriminate Latinos and Hispanic repatriation programs. Though intended to encourage voluntary repatriation most Mexicans were forcefully repatriated with total repatriates estimated to have hit a high of 500 000 Mexicans. A large number of these were legal American citizens who wished no to be deported.
The McCarthy post-war era the U.S justice arm initiated operation wet back, which was meant to mop up about a million Mexican immigrants for deportation. The discrimination against Hispanics and Latinos was extended to the legal citizens serving within the military. The Mexicans within the military were denied medical services and state burials. The deportation and denial of benefits to soldiers of Mexican decent have been some of the distinct features of discrimination against Mexicans. Hate groups have been known to increase in the U.S with anti-Mexican sentiments soaring high as well as hate crimes against Hispanics and Latinos (Allard & Harvey 2005). .
On the other hand, Asians have had a great deal of immigration laws being discriminative and curtailing their immigration. In some cases Chinese and other Asian groups were completely banned from entering the United States of America. Other discriminative injustices committed against Asians included the exclusion of the ability of Asians to testify against whites in any legal proceedings, case in point People versus Hall. The Asians were also subjected to hard and dangerous labor during the construction of the 1st Transcontinental Railroad. Their exclusive jobs included blasting ways with dangerous dynamite. Further discrimination against the Chinese was exhibited by the passage of the Chinese Exclusion act in 1882. This act was meant to stop any entry of Chinese people into America. During World War Two, the American government opened internment camps for American citizens with Japanese descent. This was implemented due to fear that they would act as Japan’s spies.
These experiences are slightly different, but they are mostly centered on immigration issues. Current trends of discrimination indicate that these minority groups experience same discrimination at work places and academic institutions (Booth, Leigh & Varganova, 2010). They have less employability and are more susceptible to hate crimes. The use of their languages is also not formally recognized. In order to rectify some of these injustices it would be appropriate if more affirmative action laws were implemented in order to equalize chances of employment and academic space (Allard & Harvey 2005).
