Sociology in a Changing World

Sociology is the study of human interactions scientifically, focusing on the social groups. By use of the concepts in sociology, sociological theories and research, we strive to understand patterns of social behavior within diverse cultures, structures and institutions. We put into examination groups dynamics, norms in the social scene, deviance, systems of inequality and the causes, effect and solutions of different problems in the society. (William, 2007)


Sociological programs are aimed at helping students in acquiring of varied skills which include, development of sociological imagination, increment of the awareness of students on how their lives are affected by the social forces; and enabling them to evaluate sociological processes critically of what happens in the world around them. These are crucial skills in the world which is changing very easily. Sociology is an exciting and illuminating field of study that analyses and explains imperative affairs in our in our personal lives, communities and the world at large. At the societal level it examines and explains matters like crime, law, poverty and wealth, prejudice and discrimination, schools and education, urban community, business firms and the social movements. The society builds the nation which then builds the globe and we also consider how sociology affects the global scene. At the global level sociology studies phenomena like the growth in pollution and migration, peace and war and the development in the economy.


Sociologists put emphasis on the keen collection and analysis of evidence about the social life to develop and enrich our understanding of some key processes. The research methods used by sociologists are varied. They observe everyday life of groups, conduct large scale surveys, interpret historical documents, do analysis of collected data, study the video taped interactions, interview participants of groups and conducting of experiments in the laboratory. These research done and the sociological theories provide strong understanding into the social processes shaping human lives and problems in the society and the prospects in the modern world.


By understanding those social processes better, we should come to understand more clearly the forces that shape the personal experiences and the outcomes of our lives. The ability to perceive and comprehend the connection between the broad social forces and personal experiences is very essential academic preparation fir living effective rewarding personal and professional lives in a changing and multifaceted society. (Wright, 2000)


Students who have attained the right training in sociology know how to think in a critical manner about the social life of human beings and know how to ask important questions of research and the entire research process. The students who are trained in sociology also know how to assist others in comprehending the way the world works and how it might be changed for the better. More generally they have the skills on how to think, evaluate and pass information clearly, in a creative manner and very effectively.


This is all one needs to know how the world works and how they what their role is in changing it. By knowing the distinctive social relations in the human nature, the varied culture and institutions that shape our world and human history you will be at a greater chance of evaluating how different groups relate in the world. (Wright, 2000).
