The book, Understanding Reading Problems: assessment and Instruction by Temple, Gillet and Crawford explores the topic of struggling readers. Much focus is on the students with special needs in reading and ELL. The authors have incorporated case studies and authentic vignettes with vivid features of writing of modern research that are clear. They have given an expanded assessment and coverage of portfolio, guided levels of reading and lexis, stages of developing stages, running records assessment of emergent literacy, teaching and assessing students with limited proficiency in English, and practical guidelines for instructing children with special needs.
The authors have given details of the emergent stages from when a student begins to read. An educator has to teach and assess phonemic awareness and concepts that foster reading understanding and comprehension. This is an early intervention program that can be applied by educators.
Various scholars have written about young children literacy and emergent literacy. These scholars have debated over the nurture and nature of the literacy of young children in development and learning with research and theory being reported.Some students have been known to developing problems in learning. The book Understanding reading problems: Assessment and instruction present the ways through which young children can be assessed to establish their literacy development. The authors have suggested on ways that can better improve the literacy development of students. They have used various quantitative and case studies to present an interpretive paradigm that describes the development of literacy of English Second Language to preschoolers. Concepts about the print, observational survey, recording and hearing sound of words and vocabulary writing are the basis which can assist an educator to assess the development of a student in literacy.
As an educator, I can apply the concepts given by the author by helping a student in word reading, identification of letter, and in the two tasks of running records text reading. It is important to observe the development of the student through interaction, being sensitive, and keeping records of the progress. I should also support the student’s achievement which will emphasize on forward movement.
Emergent literacy is the process of developing control and awareness of written language. This process occurs before preschooler’s starts the conventional reading. The use of written language and the knowledge of the language is a process that develops with time. Literacy development in the past was viewed as a tied concept with mental and physical maturation. This is because of the belief that children were first to reach a certain level of development and intelligence and acquisition of some skills in perception and motor in order to succeed in literacy. However, Temple, Gillet and Crawford and various current studies have indicated that literacy emergences much early than is believed previously.
The concept to be applied according to the authors is that the children have to internalize the print language in order to avoid challenges in reading that may possibly arise and to benefit from reading instructions.
