The Nature of Thought
Perception
Introduction
Thinking is a process that is done on daily routine from when we wake up until we sleep. During the thinking process, various steps are carried out in the mind in unison and we act by communicating out thoughts. For example, when writing an academic paper various activities go on in the mind of a writer. He or she might be thinking, whether he understands the topic, whether he is adhering to the rulings of APA format that is required and many other aspects. These are what lead to the aspects that influence and individual process of thinking and decision making.
The Nature of Thought
The thinking process can instantly be changed with emotions. The feeling of different emotions affect out behavior, an individuals’ recollection, writing or verbal tone. In a peaceful stetting, a person enjoys what he or she is doing and he feels confident about the work at hand. But in cases where a person’s is feelings is stressed he doubts whether he can provide the required services, impress the lecturer or perform well in sports. This, means that what we feel affect the way we think (Blanshard, 2004, pp 556).
Thought is an activity that happens in the mind that aims at establishing the truth. In the establishment of truth, various activities need to be undertaken such as research with the use of instruments, and reading so as to learn the truth. Other activities such as playing tennis, chopping wood and sleeping do not aim at establishing the truth. In seeking the truth, what happens in the mind is thinking. Thinking is a purposeful reflection of on ones believes and judgment of steps to do. Critical thinking involves analysis, evaluation, explanation, analysis and meta-cognition. The argument of something outside the thought is perception. Perception is greatly dealt with in Philosophy and is the foundation of the field. The medium is the mental representation of thought. It gives the features of the actual thing through a vivid, clear, and actual detail of the things.
The sensing process starts with the conversions of stimulus in the environment leading to sensing phenomena that is converted into a data and signal stream. The sensing mechanisms are assisted by the antenna. The second stage is extraction of signals which can either be running or jumping at the sight of a dangerous animal. Afterwards, there will be assessment of the stimulus through establishing the position of the animal. Human beings are assisted to sense with the aid of eyes, the nose, and the ears.
Memory is the ability to remember past learned information and past experience. It involves a process in the mind such as recalling, recognition, retention, and learning. This process is as result of the chemical changes in different brain areas between the neurons and the hippocampus. Immediate memory takes duration of a few seconds. Information that has been minimally processed is stored as short-term memory. This short-term memory is then transformed into long -term memory which can be there for many years. Facilitation of neuron chemical changes is only possible when there is repeated use of information the memory. Amnesia causes memory loss (Haslam, 2010, p 38).
There is a relationship between perception and logic. Process and meaning of logic transform to thinking. This helps an individual in making decisions after critical thinking. I have experienced an incidence in my life which my perception was not what actually exists in reality. This incidence taught me how the thinking process is affected by the nature of logic.
Logic is the science of dealing with reasoning principles in the methods of deductive reasoning. It means what we think is in the ways that the mind allows us in discerning and reasoning. Through logic we can discern evaluate and examine a particular idea. Through critical thinking, we rationalize an idea that helps us come to a solution (Wessman, 2007, pp 56).
One morning, as was walking to work, I switched on the TV to find any news of traffic updates and to access any jam along the way. Through the reporter, I found out that the route to work has been close due to an accident of two trailers. Through critical thinking and logical reasoning I had to come up with alternative routes to get to the workplace. I come up with two choices, one was backed up severely and I decided to take the other one to arrive to wok without delays.
We however encounter alot of conflicts and misrepresentation due to making of judgments based on ones perception. I remember when I first joined boarding school; I had a misunderstanding with my close friends. I was with the habit of sharing everything with them and I also expected the same from them. This is a habit that I leaned from my family and the environment I grew up in. One day, I found my friends giggling and laughing and when I came closer they kept silent. I asked them what was the matter and no one dared to reply. I was so offended. Later, I leant from others that they were discussing an academic material which they didn’t want to share with me and were making fun of how generous I am.
Conclusion
From the situation, it is true that perceptual process gave me an impact of making life decisions and choices that it doesn’t pay to be too generous. This was after a logical thinking process that made me realize that my perception may a not be the realty.
