Introduction

As I was thinking of the topic to write about, one topic crossed my mind. This was one issue that had truly disturbed me for some time the issue as to why abortion is legal. Abortion hit my mind and also two of my friends had done it. One of these friends regrets for making this decision while the other one does not. I also have a friend who chose to save the life of her child. Most of the times, I saw billboards saying to be a pro life and not to be a murdered, but I still wonder why abortion is legal. I actually do not understand the reason as to a person can chose to kill the child inside them. This is a painful process, and sometimes it can have a negative impact on the fertility of a person. One of the questions that I want to know is the effect that abortion has on women who choose to do it and why women think that this is the only option. Something else that I do not understand is why the government does not take any action and ban this act and give every child an opportunity to live.

Story of my research

In order to perform this research, I thought of newspapers, magazines, and also the website. I thought of using the website because, I knew that I could get some answers on the reason as to why the government has made abortion legal. Something else that I wanted to know was the personal feelings, effects, and reactions of the people who had an abortion. Therefore, in order to answer this question, I had to rely on people who had an abortion. I question my two friends who had an abortion and the other one who saved the life of her child.

During my search, my first interview was with my friend Joy. Joy had a boyfriend for about four years, and during her senior year she discovered that she was pregnant. Joy was confused and had no idea of what she was to do because it was too late to have morning after pills, and she also knew that abortion was wrong. Her parents were very religious, and Joy did not think that her parents would approve having a child. Her boyfriend was not also ready to become a father. Joy wanted to go to college, have a job, and that was not the right time to a mother. So, the only option that she had was to have an abortion. Joy does not regret because that was the only decision at the moment that she could make. Joy said that, after the abortion, she was depressed, but later come back to normal.

The second interview that I had was with Ivy who also got pregnant during her senior year. According to Ivy she had never thought of abortion, and knew that it was wrong. Ivy’s parents were shocked with this information, but they were supportive. She gave birth to a baby girl who everybody in the town loves and enjoys spending time with. When she was pregnant, she wondered if she would continue with her studies and where she was going to live. However, after she gave birth, her parents helped her and also offered support. Ivy is now a nurse who lives with her daughter in her own house. She is excited with the decision that she made and saying “she cannot imagine her life without her daughter.”

The third interview was with Jolly, who is a high school girl. There had been times that I drove with Jolly to take morning after pills, and she had an abortion. I asked jolly why she chose abortion and she told me that she had felt as if she did not have another chance. When I asked her how she felt after the abortion, she said she was really depressed, did not associate with friends, lost weight, cried a lot, and she devoted all her time to school work. Jolly regrets the decision that she made although she says that it was the only alternative she had at that time. From this interview, I discovered that the major effects of abortion are depression. Some other effects include isolation from friends and anorexia.

I also had a discussion with one of my co worker who is pro choice. According to this discussion, she told me that taking away the choice of abortion is like taking away more of the rights of women. She asked me if I thought it was right for a woman to keep a baby if its incest or she was raped. I responded by telling her that in the society people expect such babies to be aborted. This is the fault of the society. According to my opinion about this incidence, a woman is pregnant as a result of rape should keep the baby. The woman does not necessary required to keep the baby, but she can give it out for adoption because the baby deserve a life. According to me this is what a real woman should do. She does not have to think of what the society will say, but make her choice for the child. Women need to be responsible of their children and not give excuses about poverty.

What I learned.

What I learnt from this research is that people do not take the issue about abortion seriously. This is the reason as to why it has been legalized. Abortion should be made illegal for those people who use it as a form of birth control. People have taken abortion to be a part of life and now consider it to be no deal. This is a big deal that requires the attention of everyone. Killing a child is against the law and therefore, abortion should be an act against the law (Creinin, M et al 2009). Something else that I learnt is that women usually feel the pressure from the society and parents, and they do not be looked down upon. Girls who have been able to take care of children should be proud of themselves. This is because they have made something out of their lives and proved to the world that they can manage it by themselves. The society should not make people feel like a disappointment when they get pregnant. We should understand that we are all sinners, and we have made mistakes in one way or another. My conclusion on this issue was that, the society is supposed to change so that decisions of people can change. The government should consider this issue seriously and address it and know that the issue of abortion has become out of control. People need to understand the seriousness of the issue so that it stops being an option.
