The author appears to come from a mixed cultural family background. Based on her grandmother’s practice of voodoo, it is a fact that the family has Caribbean ancestry blood. Currently though, the author and her family lives in Hawaii. This is evident in the towns that are mentioned in the word salad. Areas such as Pearl City and Waipahu are located in Hawaii. The author also insinuates she is familiar with the Christian religion. This is seen in her reference to Virgin Mary marriage. Virgin Mary is the mother of the son of God. The names of the characters mentioned such as Grandmother Kay Toshiko, Paula Arakawa, and Angela Aiko Rosa is evidence of their Japanese ancestry. The author is modern and is exposed to western civilization. She attended Brigham Young University (BYU), a Christian based university located in USA, though her parents had plans to send her to sacred hearts.
This is ironical considering her family has members who practice Voodoo. At one point, he mentions Disneyland and movie characters such as Mel. The author also talks about modern vehicles such as the SUV and the BMW convertible car loan. The author is also intelligent well informed on modern illnesses. She discusses the case of her grandmother’s mental breakdown and reveals she was sent to a mental institution. The author also talks about leukemia and the tiredness diseases. Though the author fails to use medical terms when describing an illness, it reveals that she has basic knowledge on various health matters. Overall, there appears to be a series of conflicts that revolve around the life of the author.
