Background Information

Table of Contents

I interviewed a professional crime scene investigator stationed at Norfolk Police Department. The investigator had more than twenty years work experience. My dream career has always been to become a crime scene investigator and the key objective of the interview was to have more knowledge on this career field. I felt that getting first hand information from an individual working in the crime scene investigation department was the best way to find useful information that can help me achieve my dream career.

Discussion

According to the interview, the key objective of the crime scene investigators is to reconstruct the crime scene, find out the sequence of events, mode of operation, motive and most importantly recover the evidence. Most people have a notion that crime scene investigators are mere crime-solving machines like they are portrayed on television. It is essential for crime scene investigators to be precautious in order to preserve the natural form of the scene. Hence, precaution is a standard universal protocol at crime scene.

The increased number of television shows surrounding crime scene has spurred an interest in this field. There are several levels of crime scene investigation that one can pursue. There are several names that can be assigned to a crime scene investigator but an investigator is simply a person who investigates a crime scene. On the other hand, a detective follows up with the interviews, puts the case together and finally follows up additional information based on new discoveries (Holden, 2006).

Career options can be controlled through education. Due to the current economic state and employment factors, it is vital to control career options and employment skills. Each and every individual needs to maximize knowledge and job skills through continuing education. Hence, adult education is the key tool to achieving professional objectives in a current or potential career. When reflecting of professional objectives, one should consider factors such as earning potential, professional abilities and job skills.

My dream career is that of a crime scene investigator. If one wishes to become a crime scene investigator, he or she should major in the field of forensic science. Either a Bachelor’s degree or an Associate’s degree is required. It is however, important to keep in mind that majority of police departments require a Bachelor’s degree (Holden, 2006). A master’s degree greatly improves the value of a crime investigator applicant. Though some people can become Crime scene investigators without education, it is evident that education makes an individual more competitive n getting a job they want.

According to the response from the interview on the books that can help one become a crime scene investigator, ‘Techniques of Crime Scene Investigation by Barry, A. J. Fisher is widely recommended. The book gives one relevant and enough knowledge before entering the crime investigation field. The amount of money made by a Crime scene Investigator annually is around $ 40,000 depending on the educational level. The more college education an individual has the more money that he or she will earn. Hence, an individual with a Bachelor’s degree will in most cases make more money that an individual with an Associate’s degree.I was able to gather some information on some of the duties of a Crime Scene Investigator. Generally, Crime Scene Investigators handle complex crimes such as sexual offences, homicides and robberies. Crime scenes are evaluated by use of advanced techniques and equipment.
