Article Review

The article is by, Shaheen Majid, adopting evidence based practice in clinical decision making: nurses’ perception, knowledge and barriers. The article was published on July 2011. Prior to reviewing the article, it is vital to note the objectives of the study that is presented in the article. This is essential as it will enable one to assess whether the article has succeeded in achieving its goals. The author of the article had the objective of establishing the level of awareness that the nurses had on Evidence Based Practice (EBP). It was also the objective of the author to establish the knowledge and attitude of nurses with regard EBP. Shaheen Majid, (2011).

Achievement of objectives

The article can largely be viewed as one that portarays the author’s success in achieving the set objectives. The article reveals that the study conducted was able to determine the attitude of the nurses towards the Evidence Based Process. The article establishes that the majority of the nurses in public hospitals in Singapore had a positive attitude towards the process. It was also probable to accomplish the objective of determining the level of awareness and knowledge of EBP. The article reveals that most of the nurses that were covered by the study had minimal knowledge of EBP. This was portrayed when there was a minimal response from the nurses with regard to the barriers that prevented them from implementing EBP.

Strengths

The article can be considered to have various strengths. The article was able to portray the data collection method that was used for it to arrive at its conclusions. This is considered to be essential as the readers of the article can scrutinize the conclusions of the article against the information obtained.  The information provided by the article is verse. The author of the article does not only concentrate on collecting data from the nurses. The article provides additional information on what nurses should do in order to be able to effectively apply the EBP process.

Weaknesses

The article, however, based on the information provided has some weaknesses. The data and information collected only covered two medical centers. It would therefore not be rational to generalize the conclusions of the article. This, therefore, makes it impossible to generalize the findings to other types of hospitals as well as public medical centers. The use of a single data collection tool can also be viewed as a weakness of the article. The self administered questionnaire could be prone to bias by the nurses in their quest to conduct self assessment of their skills.

Validity

The information provided by the article can be termed as valid. This is based on the review of the data collection tool by experts such as nursing managers, registered nurses and nurse researchers. The study was also approved for ethics by the Domain Specific Review Board that was appointed by the National Health Care Group, Singapore.

Critique

I would term the article as one that is relevant to the individuals in the nursing profession. Thought the article covered a study that was conducted on a particular region, some of the information provided can be generalized. Information such as the basic skills required to undertake nursing work, as well as, implementing the EBP process can be used by nurses in any region. Identifying knowledge gaps, conducting efficient literature research were some of the beneficial information that were provided by the article.
