Journal 1
My favorite place in the world is the Florida State. One of the attributes that makes this place intriguing is the breezy and warm climate. The place has a tropical climate, which is neither too cold nor too hot. Because of its climate, the state has adopted the name “Sunshine State.” There is serene and beautiful scenery comprising of hills, rivers, meadows, shoals, islands, lagoons and forests, bays and oceans. Due to the favorable climate, Florida has a wide spectrum of flora and fauna. It is one of the most popularly known tourist destination. The state hosts both local and international tourists.
Florida State is culturally diverse. It hosts people of a variety of cultural and ethnic origins for instance the German, Native American, French, Scottish, Polish, Black Americans, Cuban Americans and the English. One can learn more about different global cultures and appreciate diversity by living or residing in the State of Florida. The other notable feature about Florida is its numerous wildlife researches which are inhabited by mammals, marine animals, exotic birds and reptiles. Some of the national parks and game reserves present in Florida include The Big Cypress National Reserve, the everglades national Park and the Timucuan Historical and Ecological Preserve.
By living in Florida I am least exposed to natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes. This implies that the region is the best place to reside and build a home. There is no tectonic plate that is at a close proximity to Florida State, and hence, there is a very rare chance of experiencing earthquakes. The last earthquake recording was on the month of January, year 1879. The earthquake took place close to St. Augustine. Therefore in addition to being my favorite and the most interesting place, Florida is the safest place to be.

There are various pull factors that make America so attractive to immigrants from all over the world. One of the factors is the abundance nature of America. One immigrant denotes that America has big cars, wide roads, large houses, and that everything is abundant. Moreover, the immigrant says that America is a land that presents great opportunities and enables immigrants to fulfill their persistent dreams. In addition to vast opportunities, there are several employment opportunities to enable immigrants to earn a living in America. Another factor that attracts immigrants is the suburbs that have safe streets, good schools as well as spacious backyards. There is a sense of freedom and autonomy in America. For instance, there is the freedom of speech whereby immigrants are free to express themselves freely, and speak out their minds.
America is a vast and diverse place that enables immigrants to have a wide variety of choices. Regardless of where an immigrant originates from, they can easily find their kin within America. The rich diversity and big region, makes the country an attractive place for immigrants from different countries globally. There is a wide array of landscape and weather from which immigrants can freely choose. The weather ranges from the cold Alaska to hot Texas.
Intellectual freedom is the other factor that attracts immigrants to America. Immigrant’s views are adequately presented and heard in the country. Hence, America has been viewed as on the easiest place to assimilate. The country has a wide variety of religious scenes which enhances its attractiveness. There is the freedom to worship, which makes immigrants to move in to the country regardless of their religions backgrounds and faiths. Hence immigration is one of the aspects that keep America, strong, young and growing.

There are several strange maps that have been illustrated though I found two of them more interesting compared to others. This is in regard to the topic being mapped. The first map that I found interesting is 500- It’s 10:15 in Germany. Do you know here your Isoglosses Are? The map gives the rationale behind Germans having a reputation for punctuality. One particular point of interest is the fact that Germans have more than one way of expressing the same time. There are a minimum of four choices of expressing a particular time. The four choices vary according to regions and this makes it possible for one to tell the region where another person originates from by considering the way they express time.
Another interesting strange map is titled 496-Fanlands: Football Supporter Map of London.This is particularly interesting because it covers the aspect of football, which is not a mere matter of life and death. This map is an indication that one of the major factors in loyalty of fans is geography by showing clearly the geographical slanting of football. The home grounds of each football team are presented by use of the centers of gravity. The dominating football teams have also been illustrated by the extent of territory that they occupy. A good example of a team is the West Ham United football club, which commands a great swath of territory and dominates in the eastern part of London. One other club that is less dominant compared to West Ham is Fulham Football club which has a relatively small territory. This map presents London as a region that hosts several football clubs, whose locations are controversial to football fans.

Malaysia is a country that is located at the south eastern part of Asia continent. Malaysian strategic importance depends on the country’s location, which is along Malacca. Malacca is the chief sea route that links the Far East to Asia, Middle East and Europe. The sea route makes it possible for trade and other economic activities between Malaysia and Europe and Middle East. For this reason, the country has been experiencing a constant increase in population. The strategic location of Malaysia has resulted to improved medial facilities, health as well as a much longer life expectancy. Due to its strategic location, Malaysia host people of diverse cultures and ethnic background. Malaysian location has also made the country to be the main source of natural resources such as gas, oil and tin that is exported to generate revenue.
Singapore on the other hand neighbors Indonesia and Malaysia. It has a coastline of approximately 193 meters and a total area of about 693 square kilometers. Due to its location, Singapore hosts natural reserves and water catchments areas. It is thus among the major tourist destinations. Because of the fact that Singapore is located at the south eastern part of Asia, it experiences a humid and hot climate. It also naturally enjoys a tropical climate owed to the fact that it is located just one degree north of the equator. Because of its geographical location that allows maritime exposure, the county’s climate has characteristics of constant pressure and temperature. It is therefore evident that the climate of Singapore is mainly influenced by its geographical location as well as by the sea.

There are several international development variables or indicators. Among the most important variables are heath care, education, income and sustainability. Institutions responsible for international development mainly lay emphasis on improving living standards as well as alleviating poverty in the Third World countries. It is essential to provide consistent health care and education in order to promote national as well as international development. The general population should have access to quality education and healthcare services that meet all their needs. Considering the four variables, the top five countries are Singapore, followed by Korea, Sweden, Norway and finally Australia. These countries are what I thought they would be. This implies that the list does a perfect job of determining “good” countries (Nagel, 2007)..
However, there are some variables which are missing in the list. These include infrastructure, environment, economics, disaster preparedness as well as governance. All these factors can act as indicators of international development. By considering these variables, it is possible for international development agencies to come up with persistent long term solutions to some of the issues affecting poor countries. A sustainable development should consider all variables and indicators of development (Nagel, 2007).
