“Ties That Bind: The Story of an Afro-Cherokee Family in Slavery and Freedom” is book written by Tiya Miles. Tiya tries to explain the events that happened before the nineteenth century between the Africans and the Indians He explains the life of an American family. The author tells the story of Shoe Boots and Doll an African slave whom he married in 1790s.The characters lived together as master and slave and they experienced many issues in America.
Cherokee and Doll experienced various issues in America in 19th century. For example, they experienced slavery together. This is because Cherokee was the master and Doll acted as a slave in the 19th century. In addition, Cherokee and Doll experienced the creek war in the country and saw the formation of the Cherokee nation in the country. They also experienced the civil war. They saw native Americans being removed from the country. The events had different effects on the life of the Cherokee and Doll (Miles, 2006).
The thesis statement is how the Cherokee family experienced the events that happened in America before 19th century like slavery. This is because the author uses the Cherokee and Doll to explain events that happened in America before 19th century and the effects they had. He uses Cherokee family because it experienced various events that have happened in American history. For example the family experienced slavery, civil war and formation of the Cherokee nation (Miles, 2006).

This is because the topic covered by the author is important and it needs more research. The topic educates the public on the need to avoid slavery, race and war (Miles, 2006).
The subject in the book is one of the current issues. The author analyzes race, slavery and intermarriage. He explains how race, slavery can affect families and individuals. He uses the Cherokee family to demonstrate the concept. Race is common in the society and it affects people differently. It has led to destruction of marriages and led to chaos. She does everything as a slave. The reader can only understand Doll by analyzing the things done to her. For instance, she is forced to marriage. The author explains how Doll seeks pension from the federal government as a window to Shoe Boots. The author uses the illustrations to show slavery in Native American countries (Miles, 2006).
The book has a bibliography list of the sources the author used. The author used secondary and primary sources to support his argument. Also, the book has indexes. Apart from the indexes, the author has used illustrations to support his argument. For example, he uses the Cherokee family as an illustration to explain the concept. The author has used charts and maps. He has designed the Cherokees family using a chart. An example of the map is the Cherokee nation. The author has used the map to show the Cherokee nation. The Aids used by the author are useful as they help the reader understand the content. The illustrations complement the text used in the book. The book is designed for scholarly audience. The reader is required to have prior knowledge of the subject being presented by the author (Miles, 2006).
The evidence presented in the book support the thesis statement. The evidence presented is relevant to the theme of the book. The source the historian consulted is adequate as they have provided enough information to support the thesis. The methods used to represent the information are good. The book is well written and organized. The author has divided the content into two sections. The book is persuasive (Miles, 2006).
