Poetry Analysis
The poem by Pablo Neruda tells a story about the boring daily life that the persona has to undergo. It explains daily habitual boring tasks and activities. The mood of the poem and persona is somber and full of lament. This is shown by these line excerpts; “I am sick of being a man” and “I don’t want so much misery”. The persona seems to be desperate character hoping for change. The disparity can be shown by the excerpt; “I don’t want so much misery”. The poem tells the story of about the various places that the persona has to visit in his/her daily duties. The set up of the places is suggestive of an urban town set up with shops and streets because the persona mentions barbershops, tailor shops and movie houses. The poem is in the form of a lyric poem because it expresses the feelings and thoughts of the persona.
It tells of activities that the persona does and the places that he/she visits in their daily duties. It further tells of the persona’s mood towards the activities and places he/she visits. The persona seems to address his wishes of stopping the daily routine to a higher authority that makes him do these boring activities. The persona through the poem addresses the laments to this authority which could be the boss in his/her work. The poet uses a lot of imagery and figurative language to give content and deeper meaning to his work. The poet employs the use of similes for comparisons and drawing elaborate scenic pictures in the readers mind. An example of similes used is; “The only thing I want is to lie still like stones or wool”. Further use of imagery is portrayed by the poet’s use of personification. In this poetic style the poet refers to non-living things as though they were truly living. The use of personification is exemplified by these line excerpts: “corpses dying of grief” and “That’s why Monday, when it sees me coming with my convict face”.
The subjects referred to in these lines are non-living but there references sound as though they were alive. The use of metaphorical references like, “being a root in the dark”, also adds to the use of imagery and figurative styles of poetry in the poem. These styles give deeper meaning than their face value and add a stylistic taste to poetry (‘Poetry styles’, n.pag). The statement corpse dying of grief shows how deeper the persona’s state of boredom and desperation is as he laments. The poems meters are irregular throughout the poem and without a specific pattern therefore, it is referred to as irregular in terms of its meters. Thus the poem is a blank verse with lines having unrhymed iambic pentameter. The poem is not a sonnet because there is no turn or volta in the poem (Miller, n.pag.). The poem is neither English nor Italian because there is no change from one rhyme group to another within the poem.
