Differences Between John gospel and Synoptic Gospels
The theologians who are liberal accept the bible as documents of history which were written by authors whose desire motivated them to promote the theological and spiritual beliefs of their group. Many of the theologians have come into conclusion that the gospel of synoptic and John are very different and that one must be rejected as an information source about the teachings and the life of Jesus. They see John having very few or none sayings of Jesus that were actual and they support synoptic gospels as having information that is useful. Many theologians who are liberal have supplemented these two conflicting gospels with writings circulated within movement of early Christian e.g. the Thomas gospel, Q gospel, etc. (Robinson, 2008).
On the other hand, theologians who are conservative support the bible as having no errors. They have a belief that the bible authors got direct inspiration from God to write text that is free of errors. They see synoptic and John gospel as being absolutely accurate and true and every passage very useful in developing spiritually. They have a belief that Jesus’ sayings quotation and his acts description is accurate in the four gospels. They believe that one aspect of ministry of Jesus is emphasized by John while the gospel of synoptic emphasizes on his Galilee ministry. The differences between these two gospels have been tried to be resolved in the following ways:
Both gospels contain a story about how aggrevated assault of Jesus on people in the temple happened but is not in an order that is chronological. Also, both gospels talk about the ministry of Jesus but the only difference is that it is reported by John on the former and the latter is reported by Synoptic gospels. In both gospels, it is indicated that the last supper and the washing of feet occurred at the last meeting of Jesus with his disciples.
Also in both gospels, it is indicated that Jesus carried the cross halfway and the rest of the way was carried by Simon and lastly, both has indicated that many women visited the tomb of Jesus on the morning of Easter. The main reason why conservative Christians concentrate on the John gospel is that it concentrates on the deity of Jesus, it is the historical basis of beliefs of Christian and lastly it basis the salvation of an individual on faith but not on works.(Robinson, 2008).
