Angelou M. (2002): I know why the caged bird sings– Random house.

The book illustrates how a character’s strength and literature love can be helpful in overcoming trauma and racism. It starts when Maya who is three years old and her brother are sent to live with their grandmother and comes to an end when Maya gets a child at the age of 17. She changes from a racism victim to a dignified woman.


Lee H. & Bloom H (2010): To kill a mocking bird: Infobase publishing.

The content of this novel is based on the observations of the author on her neighbors and family and also an activity that occurred near her home town at that time when she was ten years old. Despite of having issues of rape that are serious, this novel has a lot of humor and warmth. The theme of this novel involves injustice of race and innocence destruction. Class issues are also addressed. Other issues that are addressed include compassion, courage, and the roles of gender. Also issues of prejudice and tolerance are also addressed .This novel deals with racism issues that the author observed when he was a child in Monroeville which was his home town. It involves a case which was legal and the workings which were familiar to Lee because he had studied law.


Kipling R. (2010): Jungle book. USA: Saddleback educational publishing.

These books contain tales that are fable. Animals are used to give lessons that are moral. It lays down individual safety rules, of family and communities. It also talks about politics allegories and society.


Morrison, T. (2007): The bluest eye– Vintage International

The theme of this book is beauty ideas that relate to characteristics of class and racial. Pecola’s wish for her eyes to turn blue is referred by the title. In this book, insults to appearance physically are given in terms of racial whereby a student by name Maureen who is light skinned is shown favoritism in school.


Salinger J.M. (2007): The catcher in the rye– Langenscheidt.

The novel talks about complex issues of belonging, identity, alienation and connection. The attitude of Holden doesn’t change throughout the story that implies there was no maturation. He is at different times alienated, disgruntled, with no direction and isolated.


Stevenson, S. R, Harman C & Seelye J. (2009): Kidnapped.USA: Penguin Group Incorporated.

It talks about a boy Balfour.When Balfour father died; Campbell who was a minister gave him a letter whereby he was to take it to the property of his uncle, the Shaws. The story continues and says that Balfour, on his own heads out after his father died. He is not aware of that he is the one to inherit the estate. Though Balfour is Scot lowland, he is a boy who is taking a journey from youth to manhood.


Swarthout, G. f. (2004): Bless the beasts and children– Pocket Books.

It explains how six teenage boys who were disturbed emotionally were sent throughout the United States from their homes by their parents who were affluent to boys’ camp of BoxCanyon. The slogan of the camp was that if a parent sent a boy, he will be sent back a cowboy and the parents had a hope that the camp would help in the maturing of the boys. Each of them has been assigned to a cabin and so they are outcast by the other boys in the camp and they are all in one cabin. Their cabin lands in last position after a contest between the six cabins. According to the rules of the camp, the boys succeed in raiding all the superior cabins and win the trophy of the cabins that rank higher so as to advance in the rank but the boys use subterfuge that is executed badly and the other boys in the camp looked down upon it.


Twain, M. (2007): The adventures of huckleberry Finn– The echo library.

This book is about search of freedom. The author wrote it when there was a lot of reaction of white against blacks, i.e. during the post civil war. In his book, he has taken steps against prejudice of racial, segregation which was rising, lynching, and the generally notion that blacks are sub human. Huck is moral conflict throughout the story with the society’s values where he lives and he is unable to refute those values and so he makes a choice which is moral based on his valuation of human worth and of Jim’s friendship. Twain has father to Huck enslave him in order in order to show the hypocrisy that is needed to tolerate slavery within a moral system.


White, R. (2009): Death watch– Baker &Taylor.

The story features a hunter who was successful and also was a lawyer who gets a permit to shoot. He employs Ben who is a college student who will show him where the bighorn are. Ben tries to keep a secret about shooting of an inspector by Ben. Ben decides to kill Madec.
