Communicating at Work

1. Content of the poster and sections

Table of Contents

The poster was organized into different sections. The first section was introduction. The introduction provides background information about Hewlett Packard Development Company. The Hewlett Packard development company is an international firm that offers IT services. The company offer information technology services to business in different sectors. The company also offers information technology services to people at home. In addition the company offers printing and imaging services. The company was established in 1939. The Hewlett Packard Company is different from other companies. This is because the company has the best robust privacy program in the world. The company has policies that are gotten from the OECD rules and EU directive.

Another section is the business environment in china for HP. This section analyzes various factors. For example, it analyzes the political factor, social factors and economic factors. Moreover, the section analyzes technological factors (Bohm, 2009). The legal environment in china is not good. The country does not have strong copy right laws and parent laws. Lack of proper legal environment has affected the Hewlett Packard Company negatively. This is because most of the work produced by the company has been pirated.

For example, there are copies of the work that are available in the market at a cheaper price. This has in turn affected profits in the information technology industry as the companies are not able to make high profits. The economic conditions in china are not favorable and this might affect the demand of products and services offered by the company. This is because customers will not be able to afford the products and services.

In addition, the cultural environment in china is different from other western countries. The cultural differences might lead to conflicts as different people have different beliefs on various products and services. The cultural differences in the country might affect the promotion methods being used to promote products and services. Hence, this will affect revenue and brand awareness and recognitio. The technological environment in china is favorable due to Microsoft windows professional which is used in the country (Fine, 2009).

The SWOT analysis section analyzes the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities in the company. The company has various strengths. For example, the product in the company is easy t use and can be updated faster. The company offers quality customer care services through mobile phones. However, the company has some weaknesses as the Chinese people focus on the packaging of the product. Thus, the firm has to change it. The upgrade of the product offers an opportunity for the company to improve its products.

Other competitors in the industry act as a threat to the company. Another section is the analysis of porter’s forces. This section examines the bargaining power of buyers and suppliers. There are many buyers in the country and this has lowered the bargaining power of suppliers. The threat of new entrant in the industry is low and there is no threat of substitute as no product can be used to substitute the printer and computers. There are many firms in the industry that offer similar products. Lastly, the poster has a history section that provides a brief history of HP in china and its success and innovation. Lastly, the poster has a conclusion that provides the summary of the work (Fine, 2009).

2. Skills developed

Developing fosters requires one to have a wide range of skills. For example, should have presentation skills, analytical and problem solving skills. In addition, one shold have Information technology skills. Students who do not have such skills acquire them when developing posters. Like other students, I was able to develop various skills when creating the poster. First, I was able to acquire analytical skills and presentation skills when developing the poster. This is because I was able to analyze business problems critically and apply the knowledge learned in class. For example, I was able to carry out the SWOT analysis. In this case, I learned how to use the SWOT analysis tool to determine the strengths of a company like the HP Company. The strengths of the company are identified by analyzing the characteristics of the company and resources.

Different companies have different strengths and the researcher needs to be careful when identifying the strengths. Some of the companies have strong brands and others innovations. In this case, HP had various strengths. For example, the product in the company was easy to use and upgrade. Additionally, I learned how to identify weaknesses in a company and opportunities. Weaknesses are factors that hinder the company from progressing well. For example, the Chinese culture hinders HP from progressing well. The company has various opportunities presented by the product. The product developed can be upgraded easily. Lastly, I was able to determine the threats from the environment and market (Adler &Elmhorst, 2005).

Apart from develop analytical skills; I was able to develop presentation skills. This is evidenced by how I presented my work. Many people do not have presentation skills and this makes it hard to present the content researched well. The project helped enhance my presentation skills. Further, I was able to develop problem solving skills by solving the business problems like SWOT analysis. In addition, I was able to develop research skills and writing when developing the projects. This is because I carried out any in-depth reseach so as to be able to get adequate information to conduct the SWOT analysis and the analysis of the porters’ forces (Adler &Elmhorst, 2005).

Moreover, I was able to develop Information technology skills by developing the posted. For example, I learned how to develop a PowerPoint presentation including the main points and speaker notes. I was also able to add graphics, charts and other things to the PowerPoint presentation. Lastly, I learned how to present projects or research using PowerPoint presentation (Adler &Elmhorst, 2005).

3. Developing the poster

There are various things that I would do differently to develop the poster. First, I will change the title of the poster. The title banner should have the presentation title, poster number and the authors and institutional affiliation. That is THE POSTER PRESENTATION: HEWLETT PACKARD COMPANY IN CHINA. Then names of the authors and institutions. The title of the presentation should be written in capital letters and the author’s names and institution names capital letters and small letters. Currently, the presentation does not have institutions of affiliation, but it has the author’s names and phone numbers. In addition, the poster does not have numbers and this makes it hard for the reader to understand the presentation. Hence, changing the title banner in the poster will make the foster look good by eliminating the weaknesses of the poster.

Apart from changing the title banner, I will also modify the layout of the poster. Modifying the layout of the presentation will help make the content more attractive to the read. It will also help the reader understand the content being read easily. Further, modifying the poster layout will help ensure an equal balance of graphics and the content presented. Currently, the graphics and the content are not grouped well and this affects the reader when reading the content. This is because the reader is not able to navigate through the content well (Koutsantoni, 2007).

The poster should be approximately 48- 60’’ wide and 36’’. This is mostly used in individual posters. Though the size of the poster might be small in size, one can enlarge the poster before printing it. Producing a small size poster ensures the poster is flexible and can be used by any one. Moreover, one needs to insert pictures using the right tools so as to ensure the pictures are visible and well placed. PowerPoint offers many options that one can use to insert the pictures. For example, the insert option helps insert graphics in the presentation. After inserting the pictures one needs to crop it and enhance the brightness of the picture. The pictures in the poster need to be cropped so as to make them fit well into the space available. Cropping the pictures will ensure the content of the poster is well placed and pleasing (Koutsantoni, 2007).

The layout of the presentation is not good. This is because the sections are not organized well. The first section of the presentation is introduction then business environment, SWOT analysis and the porters’ forces. The history of Hewllet Packard Company is misplaced. The history of the company in china should come after the introduction then the other sections. This is because the history provides background information about the company. Placing the history of the company before the SWOT analysis or analysis of the environment makes it easy for the reader to understand the content. It also makes the poster attractive to the reader. The reader finds it easy to comprehend the content as it has good flow and it is well organized (Szuchman &Thomlison, 2007).

Also, I would change font size used on the poster. For example, I would use a bigger font size so as to make the content readable. Using the right font makes city easy for the reader to read the content without straining. It also helps attract the audience as it gets the attention of the reader (Szuchman &Thomlison, 2007).

A poster presentation has the same kind of an effect as an advertisement. The way the poster is developed determines various things. For example, posters that are well developed attract the audience easily than posters that are not. The posters should be designed well to attract the audience. The person developing the poster should ensure the viewer gains something from the poster after reading it. The poster should be simple and the information should be clear. Simple posters are more effective than posters that are complex and disorganized. The poster should have self explanatory diagrams. This will make it easy for the reader to understand the diagrams even without looking at the content of the poster. The poster will be developed well to make it more effective like an advertisement. For example, the diagrams in the poster will be developed well to ensure they are self explanatory (Szuchman &Thomlison, 2007).
