 Implementation of conflict resolution/mediation at a community college

Community colleges have increasingly been experiencing violence and in response, many mediation training programs and conflict resolution programs have been rapidly been developed. The conflict resolution programs in the community colleges hare mainly developed by nonviolence advocates, researchers in conflict resolution field and the legal profession members. What still remains unknown is whether these programs are effectives or not and whether the programs are needed in the first place. Various conceptual problems and methodological problems seen in the researches on programs for peer mediation and conflict resolution programs indicate that: the following are the research findings of some of the researches concerning this topic

This dissertation connects the theories of composition and rhetoric with conflict resolution the dissertation argues that mediation be demonstration leads to and expanded role of invention of rhetoric during negotiation shows how modern practices benefit from the inquiry of rhetorical theories. The findings of the research show that conflict and rhetoric resolution are ways of improving the methods of peace building and methods of inquiry.

This research has managed to evaluate the best practices of intercultural commutation in schools especially at college level. The academic level is characterized by   serious languages problems which have generated misunderstanding and misinterpretations.  Areas of focus according to the writer are on violence, mediation, diversity, relationships, negotiation, and ability to pay more attention to human concern.  These are the major areas which affect the life of young adults and when they are properly revisited they can help them handle the situations in life with dignity and in an effective way.  Changing the form of leadership is also important by implementing practices of ensuring there is effective communication among students from different cultural background. The aim of the project is developing ways of improving attitude, thinking patterns and behavior and communication.

The research paper indicates that conflict normally takes place in urban schools due to the limited resources and the large size of students.  To cope up with these schools should implement academic curriculum on conflict resolution these are the school based programs which are taught to students.  Which students are able to learn how to be good learning better ways of debating and how to view other peoples view points. Through such programs students are able to learn how to air out their differences.  The research findings were is follows.

$1a.)    Students who are untrained use strategies of conflict which ignore student’s relationships leading to the development of more destructive outcomes.

$1b.)     Many community colleges are experiencing inter student’s conflicts but no serious injuries among students have been reported.

$1c.)     Programs dealing with peer mediation and conflict resolution are effective in educating collage students on mediation procedures and on interactive negotiation skills.

$1d.)   Students after training used the strategies of conflict resolution leading to better outcomes.

$1e.)     The success of conflict resolution among students leads to a reduced number of students -student’s conflict and subsequently leads to lowered rate of student’s suspensions.

Lincoln M (1999) Conflict Resolution: A Solution for Peace through Community College Programs.

This study is in form of a proposal to various parties associated with conflict eradication. The major themes of the proposal are intervention and prevention strategies through CRE initiatives and topics such as faith –based initiatives, skills of conflict resolution peer mediation and gang prevention among others.  Positive change strategies are also highlighted in the proposal such as strengthening teacher –student relationship s, academic outcomes and family involvement.

This paper provides the teaching tools which are designed to make the society more peaceful. The teaching tools included practical and philosophical issues based on conflict management, human rights, development, and environment. This paper is based on peaces education based in bringing forth gender equality. The major programs focused in this study area programs focusing on health, income generation, and power disparities between women and men. These programs are to educate on peace education, moral sensitivity development, teaching on corporation, stimulating critical thinking and the promotion of self esteem.


 Manual for community colleges developing programs in peace and conflict studies.

This manual is a collaborative study of instructions like Cuyahoga Community college, Global issue resource centers, Nashua community college, Greenfield community college   and the United States Institution of peace. The administrators and community college faculty participated in capacity building seminar in June 1, 2009, together with Peace and conflict studies programs. The seminar was for those in support of programs in peace and justice studies. The attendees were able to share models and examples for capacity building and conflict resolution. The main agenda for the semester was to create a manual on the main topics for expansion and development of certificate and degree programs in justice peace and conflict studies.  The manual provides ways in which instructions can reflect on the programs of peace building and conflict resolution.
