Corporate Social Responsibility

 Introduction

In the last two decades we have seen changing trends in CSR. Businesses have come to embrace the concept of CSR unlike a couple of years ago where CSR was not taken seriously. In this text, I will discuss as well as identify the changing trends in Corporate Social Responsibility or what is simply known as CSR.

The changing trends in CSR

Mallin, C.A. (2009) notes that in the recent past, climate change has become one of the biggest concerns for businesses world wide. This has informed the decision by most corporate bodied to reduce the emissions of gases considered to be accelerating the pace of global warming as well as climate change. A good example of this is the recent decision to go carbon neutral by the HSBC. Most firms have also announced their initiatives with regard to a number of environmental friendly projects. This firms include Mark & Spenser (Schwalbach 2008).

Mallin, C.A. (2009) notes that businesses have also become more responsible with regard to the misuse of their various goods and services. For instance, the concern about obesity worldwide has pushed many business organizations back to the drawing board to come with healthier alternatives to their existing alternatives. For example we have the coca cola company coming up with diet coke which is specifically for those suffering from diabetes.

Conclusion

It is important to note that companies need to change their approach to CSR to one that is anchored and is part of the corporate culture. For this move to be successful, there is need to involve all the management levels as well as the various stakeholders in the corporate social responsibility initiatives.
