Effect of Catalytic Mechanism: The Walmart Case

Catalytic mechanism involves engaging in activities that are not only initiative but also practical such that application of the thoughts and mindset of business leaders results in change. Catalysts are essential in speeding up certain aspects of a business especially where change is critical as the catalyst is involved with the process of initiating events which are practical such that the business organization is able to maintain and instill continuous catalytic mechanisms which are successful (Collins, 1999).

In Collins (1999), ongoing change is classified as the form of business actions that are not only common and observed by all but also capable of implementation. From what he terms as catalytic events and mechanisms, business activities should entail aspects that are beyond meetings and initiatives into putting the speeches delivered in the meetings into action, as well as, the initiatives into an ongoing process where the company’s mission will be upheld.

In the case of Walmart, the catalytic event was to provide products to its consumers at relatively low prices such that the products being marketed there would be affordable. However, this turned out to a long term battle wit competitors who alleged foul play as Walmart was slowly pushing all the other retailers out of the market. Similarly, the ongoing effects of the scenario deluded any attempts of Walmart to change their public image (Fishman, 2003).

Therefore, since the very firs brush with the competitions in the wrong direction, subsequent years have seen the company being faced with multitudes of issues. Hence the catalytic event which was meant to be a strategy for penetrating the market turned out to be an ongoing negative effect on the company’s image (Fishman, 2003).
