My Experience In An American Sign Language Beginner Class.
In my everyday encounter with the deaf community, I was compelled to study the sign language as an important factor to interact with them. I enrolled at an American Sign Language beginner class and I found it interesting. I learned that ASL concentrates on lip reading and written language, which is a different aspect from learning the English language. This is because the aspect of hearing or listening is not included in ASL. Another different aspect I learnt about ASL is that it has its own grammatical structure and vocabulary. Learning sign language can, therefore, help the deaf to learn other languages. Within the first two weeks of the ASL class, I learned the importance of first introducing myself to other members of the class. My classmates comprise of people using American Sign Language and the deaf people. I believe that continuing with this class will help me to communicate with the deaf people because I will increase my vocabularies of the sign language.
I see myself continuing with the ASL/Deaf Community because I belief that I will learn to communicate with this community not only through ASL, but also through the American English. This is because the ASL beginner class is not only for teaching the deaf on the standard American sign language, but as a foundation for them to learn the American English language. This means that, just like those who are not deaf, the deaf have the ability of becoming bilingual. This means that the ASL is their first language while English language is their second language. Also, the non –deaf will benefit from this class by learning the rules, vocabularies, and grammatical structure of ASL just like they learn any other foreign language such as Japanese, German, or French.
