Federal government priorities on intermodal transport in regard to 2009 recession

Intermodal transport can be viewed to mean the mode of transport relating to more than one mode of transport. For example, a station which provides transfers between buses and trains could be described as intermodal. In the view of freight, intermodal usually refers to land/sea containers.

In order to improve intermodal transport system the federal government has put in place plans and priorities in place which include the following: Promoting a light railway system, bus services in remote areas, traffic efficiency (reducing heavy traffic hours, providing of mass transport modes) strengthening the government’s financial support to mass public transportation.

Committing to keep air, marine, rail and road transportation systems among the safest in the world and worthy of public confidence. Broad areas of transport safety activities include conducting research on how accidents happen and, helping organizations develop and use safety management systems to identify and minimize the possibility of accidents and devoting resources to help prevent accidents in areas where they are most likely to occur.

Innovative solutions, particularly the application of new technologies, are critical to address the need for improvements in transportation productivity, sustainability and safety.

Research to be done in order to curb emerging challenges and also to provide opportunities to increase stakeholder cooperation by better use of resources and increased cooperation.The government should work towards cleaner transportation for the country and its citizens.

These functions are to be performed by the necessary sector like the transport department in the government. The federal government should also play a role in the budgetary allocations for the sectors involved
