Global Economy

Introduction

Numerous changes have occurred in the last two decades. These changes which include globalization, technological advances as well as a diverse workforce have changed the Organizational setting as it was known two decades ago. In this text, I look at the role of  I/O psychologists in the modern Organisation setting as well as the impact technology, globalization, corporate restructuring as well as diversity has had on employees and the workplace.

The role of I/O psychologists

Psychology defines how individuals act, think as well as feel when we take such things as behavior and cognition into consideration. According to Kezar (2001), industrial/organizational psychology mainly concerns itself with the workplace. Kezar (2001) goes ahead to list some of the roles I/O specialists play in the modern Organizations as  coming up with recruitment procedures, coming up with systems of evaluations and compensation, surveying attitude levels at the workplace and sometimes helping employees to handle stress.

The impact of modern changes on employees and workforce

Technology has been associated with both efficiency and effectiveness at the workplace. With its advantages as a cost saving measure it has become a necessary skill every employee should acquire to remain relevant at the modern work setting. The world has also become a global village meaning that organizations can now conduct business in a number of countries with great ease. According to Kezar (2001), for consulting businesses, it makes great economic sense to hire consultants in the third world countries due to the lower cost of labor there.Issues ranging on ethnicity, race, gender, sexual orientation etc have also taken centre stage in the modern organizational setting. In the last two decades, lobby groups have pushed Organizations to have respect for diversity and this has had the effect of making the workplace conducive for workers no matter their social or economic background.

Conclusion

Most commentators have noted that it is the ability of the Organisation to handle these changes that will determine its future success. It remains to be seen how organizations will handle more changes presenting opportunities as well as challenges in the next decade
