Hindu Influence In America
Introduction
Hinduism has been variously mentioned to have a growing influence in the America culture contrary to popular belief. In this text, I will discuss some Hindu influences in America.
Hindu influences in America
According to Thomas (2003), Hinduism influence in America started a while ago with some people like martin Luther king advocating the Hindu principle of non violence. This principle has variously been used by other activists to call for a non violence approach to problem solving. Other indicators of the growing influence of Hinduism include the widespread practice of Yoga meditation amongst the American populace as well as the growing use of alternative medicines and vegetarian diets all of which were influenced in a large part by Hinduism. Thomas (2003) notes that intermarriages between Hindus and Americans have also contributed to Hinduism influence in America. He goes on to say that the couples who intermarry meet in universities and once they marry, Hindu temple leaders usually take their time to come up with programs designed to help the Non-Hindu spouse to learn more about Hinduism. Thomas (2003) also notes that in the recent times America has seen an increase in the number of Hindu doctors, scientists as well as successful entrepreneurs who are well placed to influence policy and decisions in America.
Conclusion
With Hindus being often low profile and peaceful members of the society hence enabling them to relate well with other members of the American society, their influence in America is expected to grow going forward.
