Humaniterean Services

 Introduction

Most social organizations are concerned with social change and welfare. They work towards improving certain groups of people’s life quality as well as help in the realization of the full potentials of members of selected groups. In this text, I look at two human service agencies websites and compare their content as well as service delivery. I look at convoy of hope (www.convoyofhope.org/) which is based in the U.S as well as Temwa (www.temwa.org) which is registered in the U.K.

A comparison of the content and service delivery

Convoy of hope is an American Organisation which provides food and clean drinking water to those who are in need not only in the U.S but also across the globe. This Organisation works with a big number of volunteers to offer hope by distributing something to eat and drink for thousands who may not be in a position to access this precious needs.Temwa is an Organisation based in the U.K and its main mandate is to raise funds to sustain projects in Southern Africa as well as Malawi. These projects must be community based. Temwa strives to come up with projects geared to make an impact in four distinct areas namely; agriculture, development of skills, education on health matters, as well as support of schools. In its education on health maters initiative, Temwa concerns itself mainly with HIV and Aids. It works on reaching out to those most affected by the scourge by educating locals on how to protect themselves and handle those already infected or affected.

On development of skills, this initiative offers training such as tailoring and other hands-on skills to locals so that they can work and uplift the standards of living to their families. In its agriculture as well as forestry initiative, Temwa advises locals on the best crop varieties they can grow for a nutritional diet. This is informed by the mantra that a healthier nation is a working nation. Temwa also runs the schools support which includes construction of classes and more recently a scholarship initiative which will benefit those who are unable to finance their education.Unlike convoy of hope, Temwa diverts almost all of its attention to the support of families in Malawi and does not deal with disaster response. Its initiatives are mainly geared towards financial as well as humanitarian difficulty alleviation and it offers help to the local community with regards to maintenance of family and communal wellbeing and stability.Convoy of hope’s initiatives includes community outreach, response to disasters initiative, programs on sustainability and issues touching on advocacy.

Convoy of hope’s community outreach is much different from that one of Temwa. Its approach includes giving free groceries as well as sponsoring of children activities. In such initiatives, volunteers interact with the community members and in this way people bond irregardless of their age, gender, race, or even faith. In disaster response initiative, convoy of hope has the a well developed disaster response mechanism including a fleet of trailers, a command centre equipped with high tech mobile communication system as well as warehouse which measures 300000 square foot, one of the largest of its kind. It effectively and efficiently responds to disasters in collaboration with like minded organizations and agencies. With water related ailments causing the death of a child every 15 seconds (Tomasini et al. 2009), Caravan of hope’s programs concerned with sustainability works with development partners to find solutions to the water problem. Apart from the water initiative, caravan of hope also has a seeds initiative offering guidance to individuals on gardening as well as planting of seeds. On advocacy issues, caravan of hope presents itself as a voice for those who are considered voiceless in the society.  It reminds individuals as well as corporate bodies to offer a helping hand to those in need of such help.

Conclusion

Despite both organizations dealing with social initiatives for the benefit of disadvantaged groups in the society, its clear that they support diverse causes which go a long way to uplift various communities and people’s wellbeing as well as quality of life.
