An individual has to have an extensive set of skills in order make a good manager. These skills range from motivation and communication to delegation and planning. In this assignment, a new department within the Services division is in need of a manager with essential skills. Some of the questions to use in ensuring a right candidate is hired will be examined.

What does an organization have to do to make you feel motivated?

What actions should a manager take so as to motivate others? Why are the actions sometimes unsuccessful?

What type of performance feedback do you prefer and how often do you need the feedback?

Questions to assess interpersonal skills

Describe a conflict that you encountered at work and how you resolved it.

What are two examples of attitudes or actions that are likely to cause conflicts at work?


Questions to assess planning skills

Please give a description of a time when your plans failed to work. What actions did you take to recover?

There are a number of characteristics that a candidate needs to possess to be considered for the managerial position in the new service department. Self-motivation is among the key traits. A person hired should show commitment towards the job assigned with minimal supervision. Trustworthiness and integrity are also necessary. It is essential to hire someone who can be trusted with business growth. Additionally, the individual has to be a team player. This implies that a manager should be show willingness to work in a team so as to attain a common goal. Dependability is also vital. One needs to hire a manager that can be counted on. The individual should have many years experience in planning, organization, and controlling. Preferably, the candidate should have held a managerial position in the past (Daft & Marcic, 2012).


The candidate should have good customer service skills. Regardless of the type of business, great benefits can be reaped by having a manager who portrays excellence when dealing with clients and customers. When the service department has issues with customers, the person who has the ability to address the situation is the manager. Leadership skills are also worth noting. Beyond all other skills, a good manager needs to have strong leadership skills. He should show confidence in the capability of leading a team. The individual should be able to assign tasks effectively (Daft, 2012).


A candidate deemed to be an effective manager tends to have different management styles that can be employed depending on the current situation. All the styles entail the extent to which a manager opts to let employees take part in the process of making decisions (Kador, 2006). By asking the right questions, an interviewer can know whether a candidate has an autocratic style of leadership. This is a form of leadership where employees do not contribute much in decision-making. Tell mode is another style, where the manager has the responsibility of making decision followed by communicating the decision made to the workforce. In a join management style, employees fully take part in the process of making decisions (Kador, 2006). Generally, a management style should be a clear reflection of the situation managed.
