JOHNSON AND JOHNSON

J&J has three major divisions; the consumer product division e.g. the J&J baby care products, the pharmaceutical and medical division. They embarked on the acquisition of smaller drug companies and firms that deal with cosmetic medicines and other promising drugs like the acquisition of the Mentor Corporation and the Pfizer’s Consumer health unit so as to expand ,extend and ensure tremendous growth of its market and to have a wide range of businesses in the health care sector. The acquisition of a wellness and protection firm also saw the creation of a system to monitor and foster fit behavior among the company’s staff.

According to CEO Weldon of Johnson and Johnson, other areas that will see the growth of the company will involve increasing the working together of different units within the company such as the units that deal with medical services, pharmaceutical products and the consumer products to aid in developing new products. However this corporate strategy has its effects, a decrease in the disposable income of consumer goods resulted to the sale of consumer products dropping. Investors witnessed a dropped in the 2009 revenue as compared the previous year. The expiration of patent on some of its drugs and introduction of generic drugs to the market also affected the drug business. The employees of the company also experienced a shake-up and staff e.g. Nicholas Valeriani were promoted to head an office that improved the relation between Johnson and Johnson various business units as much as they are autonomous and independent. The autonomy and independence given to each division fosters an entrepreneurial attitude that ensures competitiveness and encourages them to grab and respond to opportunities when they arise.
