Landslide: Tacloban City 2011 March 17

The most recent landslides in Phillipines is the mudslide in Barangay 97, Cabalawan in Tacloban city near San Juanico Bridge of the Leyte Province, Eastern Visayas (allvoices.com, 2011) of the Phillipines country on March 17, 2011 (ABS.CBNnews.com, 2011). The fatalities included Marlon Jordan and his wife Jenetta and their five children, as identified later by National Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) head by the name Benito Ramos (allvoices.com, 2011).

The family of seven was killed in a predawn mudslide that hit their house resulting from loosened soil caused by continued heavy rains (gmanews.tv, 2011) after burying them in mud and boulders in Brgy. The land slide was one among two others that occurred in the Tacloban city with the other two reporting no injuries as people managed to flee from their houses. As a result, many people have been evacuated from the area, property of large amounts damaged, schools closed as classes were destroyed, roads made impassible, and crops destroyed (Gmanews.tv, 2011).

Most flights to and from the Tacloban city have been postponed making rescue and feeding processes difficult.Brgy is a mountain village in Cabalawan near San Juanico Bridge, Tacloban city. Few cases of earthquakes with minor effects have been reported in the city. In December 24, 2007, there was reported an earthquake of magnitude 3.3 in the province of Lyte (Taclobanhotels.com, 2007).

The earthquake rocked four towns in Leyte province on an early Monday morning but the institute of volcanology and Seismology said no damages or aftershock were expected which was indeed true. The quake had originated from Philippines Fault Zone and was felt in several towns though at low intensities. Sliding events have not been experienced before and the cause of the slide is therefore based on the mountainous nature of the Brgy village in Tacloban city.
