Norm Violation: Singing Loudly on a Public Bus, Train, or Subway

The norm I chose to violate is singing loudly on a public bus, train, or subway. The choice of this norm was because it is expected that, in these areas, people should keep calm and avoid any form of disturbance to those around. The norm was violated to observe the reaction of the people around the areas, and the effect it had to me as the violator.

The setting was social since it took place at a place with many people to whom it was to affect. Everybody was busy chatting their friends and those without friends were quiet. This setting was chosen as it had people who had similar behaviors. The people affected by the unusual behavior were expected to show similar reactions. In this setting, all people were expected to show some form of been annoyed.

People were all calm and conversing in low tones before I started to sing. Therefore, I resolved to do something that will draw their attention to me. When singing, the different people turned their necks towards me, and looking me made me feel I had attained my objective of drawing their attention. I behaved as if what I was doing what normal. After singing, I felt unease as people looked at me.

The other people in the setting looked at me with disbelieve while others asked me to sing slowly as I was disturbing them. People around me moved to seats that were a bit far as they thought I was mad. Others tried to shout me down with a fury.

In conclusion, I learned that there are norms that control the society and to go against these norms would cause unease in the society. I learned that as a social being whatever I do in the society against the social norms affect the people around me. Social norms should be upheld at all times. Breaking them causes trouble in the society and can be embarrassing to the violator.
