Introduction
In an Organisation, management and leaders always emerge as two different concepts. With the ever increasing complexity of global business, there have been renewed efforts to look at the aspect of leadership and management, their correlation as well as their distinctive roles in taking the Organisation to the next level. A manager has been identified as the person in the Organisation who has been charged with the responsibility of planning, coordinating as well as implementing the various organizational goals. On the other hand, a leader has been identified as that individual who is involved in leading a group as well as whose influence in a group exceeds formal authority and responsibility of a supervisory nature. In this text, I look at the role of leadership in an Organisation as well as how leadership relates to culture and Organisation
The role of leadership in an Organisation
It should be noted that the organizational success does not depend only on the leader. Organizational success depends on people across al the levels of the Organisation. However, leaders in the organizational setting should play his part to ensure the organizations goals and objectives are met. According to Longest et al. (2000), some of the roles of the organizations leadership include but are not limited to;
Establishment of the Organizational direction
Through vision and strategy, organizational leadership is charged with establishing the direction of the Organisation. The leadership in the organizational setup should come up with an analysis as well as future projections of the organizations environment and establish a path that all the organizations employees can follow and believe in. he or she should understand that the Organizations performance and implementation of the organizations strategic plans solely depends on him or her.
Enhancement of performance
Sometimes employees suffer burnouts as a result of work overload. The leadership in the organization should ensure that they mitigate this through a number of ways so as to avert a fall in performance. This organizational leadership can achieve by offering counsel to the employees as well as providing mentoring to employees so as to restore the right attitude towards the performance of duties
Motivation of the organizations staff
The leadership in an Organisation should come up with strategies to ensure that the organizations employees are motivated so as to maximize their output as well as production capabilities. The success of the Organisation largely depends on the employees and hence learning how to inspire the workforce should be high on the Organisation leaderships list of priorities.
Ensuring that the right systems and structures are in place
For an Organisation to function efficiently and effectively, it should have the right systems and structures in place. The effectiveness of an organizations structure can be known by looking at how people, functions, departments as well as divisions work and interact together. It is the duty of the organization’s leadership to come up with and design a working organizational structure by reviewing the organizational chart
To identify the organizations key strengths
An organizations key strengths and capabilities is what distinguish it from the competition in the marketplace. Key competences contribute to a great extent to an organizations competitive advantage. An organizations leadership should therefore identify and fully exploit the organizations core competencies so as to enable the Organisation to compete effectively in the marketplace.
Selecting and developing a talented team of managers
The organizations top leadership is charged with the selection, development as well as mentoring of a talented cast of functional managers. One of the key aspects of leadership is delegation. It frees a leader and enables him or her pursue other interests of importance to the organizations success and development. Those to whom the various roles and duties are delegated to should be reasonably qualified. Hence the Organisations leadership should that it selects the right manpower for the advancement of the organizations goals and objectives.
The relationship of leadership to culture and structure
Though there is no single definition of organizational culture, it can be said to be the expectations as well as norms and shared values that direct individual’s interaction and approach to their work in an Organisation. The match between people and the organizational culture can affect the Organizations success.Leaders should have a very good understanding of the organizational culture so as to enable them to plan and direct the various activities in the Organisation and thus ensure that employees are committed to the attainment of the organizations goals (Antonakis et al. 2004)Scott (2003) argues that to remain relevant in the long term, an Organisation should have an efficient leadership as well as organizational culture. A strong organizational culture depends on efficient leadership.
It therefore follows that if an organizations leadership is not strong enough, then the organizational culture will be weak in the long term. It is hence possible to say that the organizational culture and leadership are intertwined.Organizational structure is basically the reporting relationships within an Organisation that enhance and enable the control as well as coordination of employees for the achievement of the organizations goals and objectives. Leaders are charged with the responsibility of coming up with an Organisation structure that encourages employees to maximize their capabilities as well as work and cooperate together (Antonakis et al. 2004).To have a good insight into the adjustments required in the Organisation, leaders should have a good understanding of the impact of the organizational structure. There is no substantial change in the Organisation that can take place without taking the organizations culture into consideration (Scott 2003). An organizations leadership should therefore ensure that it has a full understanding of the organizational culture to effect meaningful change within the Organisation.
Conclusion
It is good to note that for an Organisation to remain relevant; its leadership should realize the importance of developing the competence of the Organisation-wide team by encouraging team work and providing mentoring amongst a range of other leadership roles.
