Prison Inmates Outline

Since the establishment of prison classification system by the federal bureau of prisons and the California department of corrections in the 1970’s, there has been fundamental change in the nation’s inmate management and classification. In this form of system, the prisons have been able to manage and operate the populations of their offenders. This classification has for long been based on offenders’ misconduct and for the planning of construction of new prisons and development programs for inmate. Today there is need to evaluate the existing systems of prison classification given the larger size and diversity of inmates population.

In the introduction this paper will evaluate the need to re-evaluate the current and existing classification system for prisons. This is driven by the increasing number of inmate population and the issue of diversity. To deal with the issues of prisons classification, the importance of inmate classification at the initial entry, internal assimilation and the process of reclassification will be evaluated.

In the literature review part, a close examination of current and existing classification programs will be examined. There will also be a detailed evaluation of the fundamental importance of classification of inmates at the three distinct stages of incarceration and contrast them in active prisons in order to obtain the most effective approach to manage prisons.

In part three, the works of different researchers will be evaluated to examine the gaps in research as many have tended to put more focus on determination on the custody level of inmates and where the inmate will be transferred to after classification. However, few researches have focused on the research of how transferred inmate adapts to the new facility.

By classifying inmates at three different levels of incarceration, this will provide make the adaptation of the inmate easier and easy to manage. The inmates will also be empowered to meet their correctional goal. Further need for reexamination of the program will be directed as a conclusion.
