Research Proposal Topic

The first research topic is “An Exploratory study of bullying and cyber bullying behavior among economically/educationally disadvantaged middle school students.” The purpose of this study was to study influential factors that associate to verbal, social, and physical bullying and those factors associated with cyber bullying like gender and grade level were studied for their association. The study was intended to identify whether or not there is any relationship between the influence factors in order to allow for school administrators, parents and staff and students to be educated on current behaviors of cyber bullying.

Study method involved 106 students from Summer Connection Program and in their 7th, 8th and 9th grade. The bullying surveys were administered once to six groups of 106 students in a one day period in June 2010. Results revealed that relationship existed between grade levels and observing others being bullied. There were also 50% of students who reported being bullied.

Second topic is “Cyber worlds: new playground for bullying.” The purpose of this study was to evaluate cyber bullying incidents, media used, and experiences of the students. The study also aimed at evaluating awareness of students on cyber bullying in peer groups, and the relationship technology use, gender and grade had on middle school students in three Hawaii schools.

The study involved a total of 265 students 70% of whom were female and from 6th, 7thand 8th grade. The students filled in two questionnaires with 26 and 15 questions respectively. Surveys were distributed by teachers of the 265, 91 were from school A, 94 school B and 80 school C. results revealed 96 % of students having access to internet connected computers at home, 33% went online daily, 80% owned cell phones and 43% of them used them daily.

Third research topic “Cyber Bullying and victimization: psychosocial characteristics of bullies, victims and bully/victims.” The purpose of the study was to explore cyber bullying and victimization among students between 6th and 8th grades who revealed being cyber bullies, victims or bullies/victims. Hypotheses: both bullies and victims would be cyber bullied and victimized, with females being more vulnerable than males; cyber bullying and victimization would be associated with psychosocial maladjustment; cyber bully/victims and individuals who were victims of both face-to-face bullying and cyber bullying would exhibit poorest psychosocial adjustments.

Research was used 219 middle school students enrolled in four schools during the time of study. Results indicated 69% of participants were involved in cyber bullying and or victimization. The females had high representation among cyber bullies, bully/victims and victims. Both cyber bully/victims and victims of both face-to-face had poorest psychosocial adjustments. Externalization behaviors and total problems were most prevalent in cyber victims.
