Ricardo Semler is the chief executive officer of Semco, a firm that manufactures industrial machinery. This article demonstrates how Semler has managed to implement the concept of corporate democracy in his organization. Semler got involved in a car accident and spent months in hospital recovering from the accidents. Despite his absence from the company, the firms carried on with business as usual. This was possible because of the concept of corporate democracy.Organization democracy is a concept that suggests that organizations thrive best by trusting employers. The founder or senior management team may not be always present to direct to decisions of the company. The future of the company may sometimes depend on the empowerment of employees. Human beings are naturally able to direct themselves.
Therefore, managers do not need to micromanage their organizations. All the managers need to do is to ensure that employees become committed to the organization. Employees need to be treated like rational being and allowed to learn from the mistakes.Semler model entailed allowing employees to decide what to do and when to do it. Semler argues that the employees know the goals of the organization and will act in accordance with this goal. The employees at Semco set their own work hours and levels of pay. There is no dress code, no policies and no plans for the organizations. According to this article, self governance has enabled Semler to establish a flexible organization. Employee empowerment enabled the organization to endure difficult time including Semler’s accident. The success of the Semler’s model is reflected in the performance of the organization. The company has grown y over 20% for the last 14 years.
