Scholarly Writing

In the paragraph provided for this assignment, various strengths and weaknesses as pertains to scholarly writing are evident. In terms of strengths, the author has used scholarly voice that would come in handy with regard to attracting attention from the audience. This is because he has used a tone that easily transfers his thoughts to the reader. (Clark, 2010)


Another notable strength of the paragraph with regard to scholarly writing is that the author has avoided grammatical errors in terms of apostrophes, prepositions and adverbs. While introducing the paragraph, the author has use catchy words that have the potential to draw the attention of readers. Furthermore, the opening remarks introduce the readers or audience to the main issue that has been addressed by the author.(Rocco, 2011)


On the other hand, there are several notable weaknesses in the paragraph as far as scholarly writing is concerned; firstly, the author has used some aspects of slang in the paragraph. This is evidenced by the use of the phrase “plugged in”; whereas such a phrase may be used in oral communications, it is an unacceptable tactic in scholarly writing. Some of the sentences contained in the paragraph are quite lengthy; this is a major weakness as far as scholarly writing is concerned. (Clark, 2010)


Additionally, the author has failed to provide sufficient citations and/or references for his paragraph. In essence, the author must have borrowed the information contained in the paragraph from other sources; these sources should be acknowledged using in-text citations or footnotes. Due to the weak evidence provided by the author, it is quite difficult to differentiate his personal opinion and secondary research. In terms of bias, the author has strongly emphasized upon the positive aspects of computers without highlight their shortcomings; this also highlights the weakness in terms of scholarly writing. (Rocco, 2011)
