00-05 |
Child | Dad, I am tired. Can we go home?
05- 07 | Parent | I am too, but let us practice one more skill, and we are off. Hey, have some water (throws a bottle of water to the son and switch from running session to football passing). | The child’s father gives enough time to the child and listens to him carefully. He responds directly to the child’s enquiries. This encourages the child and spurs on the conversation. |
07-11 | Child | Okay. You do not get tired, do you? (Laughs as he hits the ball back) | The child asks open-ended questions. School age children are inquisitive and creative in seeking information from adults. |
11-12 | Parent | Son, see I need to shed some weight off. I am overweight and at risk of weight associated health problems.
12-15 | Child | Oh! I remember the doctor’s report, but I am sure, by next practice, you will be minus four pounds. Today’s practice has been intense. I hope I lose some too. | The child shows non repetition of words. He is articulate and shows strong transition from one word or statement to the other. He shows mastery of appropriate application of semantics. |
13-17 | Parent | You do not need to. You are young and need to eat well and grow as long as you are exercising and eating the right foods.
17-18 | Child | Yeah, but I need to be watchful about my weight and eating habits. (Runs after the ball as performs some press-ups). | The child demonstrates commendable turn takings. The boy listens and recognizes his turn to talk. He does not interrupt his father. |
18-19 | Parent | You see Steve that is the right mind. Do not need to worry about food. Your mom always talks to a consultant nutritionist. I am sure the food she prepares is quality food for the family. The only thing that is exercises, in school, home, and wherever place meant for sports. | The father’s responses are knowledgeable. He introduces related topic. This helps the child comprehend diverse words and expand his knowledge of interrelated issues. |
19-23 | Child | This reminds of the nutritionist. I think I need an assessment too. I need a diet plan and also a scheme of exercise. | This piece of speech shows imagination. He comments and asks creative questions. He recognizes and relates situations; he understands the father’s situation and relates to his own health and nutrition status. This also shows appropriate use of vocabulary. He understands the term nutrition and knows how to use it in sentences. |
23-29 | Parent | Right, absolutely. You need to know your weight, height, and other nutrition measurements. Monitor theme because they are indicators of appropriate growth and health status. We can now go son. (Takes water, collects the ball, and walks towards their car).
29-30 | Child | Yes dad. We can go and eat now. I am hungry. (Runs to the car too). | He controls his tone of voice, in order to convey different feelings. He is happy the tiresome practice is over, and the volume of his speech expresses satisfaction with the decision to leave. This is impressive evidence of continuity in phonology |
