Shortage of Nurses and Violence in the Work Place

Shortage of Nurses and Violence in the Work Place

Shortage of nurses and violence in nursing workplace environment are two things that may affect nursing industry in the next few years. Nursing industry plays a vital role in the society setting. It provides healthcare services to the community thus it offers services essential for human development. Nursing professions sets specific standards that are used in enrolling applicants who want to join nursing industry. There are challenges that affect nursing health care such as shortage of nurses and violence of employees in the workplace. This is something that poses a threat in the nursing industry and may develop problems in the near future. This essay will develop a researchable problem based on the shortage of nurses as well as the current violence in the nursing industry.

Currently the nursing industry experiences difficulties in shortage of nurses. Most of nurses in the health care industry are the aging population. Baby boomers form the greatest number of employees in nursing as well as other areas of employment. This is a serious risk simply because these people are getting old and will in few years time go for retirement. As the aged group becomes old, few people in the current generation are enrolling for nursing programs. Study shows that in the next few years nursing industry will have a serious problem for there will be no professionals to provide healthcare services. The rate at which aging generation is going for retire is high as compared to the rate at which young people are enrolling for the same program. This situation will develop a significant impact on nursing industry because nurses available will not manage to provide required nursing services to the community. Something should be done in order to solve the issue before it becomes worse, (Yakov, et al, 2010).

Another problem with shortages of nurses in the nursing industry is the rate of nursing retention. Nursing facilities have poor nursing retention system, and that is why most nurses go for alternative courses. Nursing industry has failed simply because it does not provide the right working environment for nurses. Work load in the nursing industry is more as compared to benefits nurses get hence they seek for alternatives. This indicates that the trend on nurse shortage will continue as years goes, and it results to difficulties that will cause serious impact. Alternative professionals provide opportunities for the young generation something that makes the number of individuals in the nursing industry to reduce. Most young men and women are eying professions that provide them quality life and proper compensation compared to their input. Some of the professions that have made nursing industry experience shortage of applicants include law, technology, accounting, and the corporate world, (Polit & Beck, 2012).

Qualification level plays another role in the nursing shortage, in the healthcare industry. Entry qualifications of nursing programs have discouraged many people in taking nursing programs. Another thing is the duration it takes for someone to complete a nursing program has pose a significant impact on the level of individuals who enroll for the nursing program. Evidence shows that unless some reviews are done in the nursing industry, most people will shift to other professions for their survival. Individuals who want to enroll for nursing programs must meet certain qualifications something that has created an environment that is not suitable for the young generation, (Davies, 2011).

Violence in the work place is another problem that faces nursing industry. Shortage of nurses and violence in the nursing industry is two things that go hand in hand. Baby boomers that are in the largest number, in the nursing industry do not create a friendly environment for the new nurses. In most cases, baby boomers do not handle new nurses in the appropriate way. They fail to train them something that creates conflict when the new nurses are called to accomplish vital healthcare duties. Another thing that causes conflict in the nursing industry is that new nurses do want to over work hence the industry has a lot to accomplish for the community. This violence has made most nurses seek alternatives in other professions something that creates a shortage in nursing heath care. Since baby boomers will in the near future retire and leave the new generation in the workplace nursing industry will have the greatest problem. Nurses will not have the appropriate knowledge because educators have failed to create an appropriate learning environment for the new generation, (Fouka & Mantzorou, 2011).
