What Multidisciplinary care means:

Multidisciplinary care refers to a collaborative approach to treatment, strategic planning, and progressive care throughout the treatment series. The multidisciplinary care intends to ensure that members of the treatment and care team can discuss all relevant medical issues regarding the prevalent chronic diseases a long side patient’s psychosocial and physical needs, as well as, other factors affecting the patient’s care.


                                   The significance of Multidisciplinary care:

The complex nature of patients in Intensive care units requires effective care communication and coordination through a multidisciplinary approach to ensure excellent practice evidenced based medical care. An efficient and effectual multidisciplinary loom can result in a number of positive results for patients receiving the care, teams offering the care, as well as health services in entirety. Some of the benefits are as the following; Recognition of emotional needs of the sick people. The patience would receive better treatment physically and psychosocially; hence recovering within a short period of time.


There will be improved treatment planning through consideration of full therapeutic variety and hence improved results. Furthermore, there will be improved team communication experienced in the multidisciplinary team meetings. This will be effected through the opportunities of learning and educational expansion for team members.  As is not enough, there will be a reduction of service replication, enhanced synchronization of services and improvement of clear lines of conscientiousness between the stakeholders of the multidisciplinary team.


The patients will benefit from quality services offered in the hospitals since there will be improved treatment planning ensuring counterproductive outcomes. The hospital will develop appropriate referral networks, including appropriate referral channels to meet psychosocial requirements. Nursing plays a significant role in ensuring efficient treatment for patients at all times. Through the multidisciplinary care, the nurses get distributed in various medical support teams; thus ensuring equitable distribution of the treatment work load.


             Obstacles that must be overcome to accomplish the organization’s goal: 

The obstacles to be defeated include; cases of duplication of services due to lack of setting clear lines of responsibilities between members of the multidisciplinary care team. In addition, redundancies in implementation of the multidisciplinary care strategic plans.  This would result to delayed outcomes of the plans set to improve treatment, as well as, healthcare in general. Inadequate resources to facilitate the treatment system will cause reduction is quality server provision since medical services need sufficient resources to cater for patient’s needs.


Ignorance of the emotional needs of patients should be avoided for purposes of achieving the organization’s goals. This also goes to the team members since ignorance of the key aims of the organization would result to the negative output. Team members should uphold the values of the organization in a bid to overcome any obstacles that would arise within the organization.


                               The role of the Board of Directors should play:

The board of directors should protect the team members and ensure stable adherence of the organizations rules and regulations. This is the uppermost principal authority within the management framework at any organization.  In Medical Intensive Care Unit, (MICU) the board of directors is mandated to oversee the all the activities within the organization. Furthermore, it is the board’s job to select and implement the policies of the organization. As if not enough, the board is also mandated to select, evaluate and approve appropriate reimbursement of the chief executive officer (CEO) of the corporation.
