U.S Federal Food Safety Law

The US Food Safety Law seeks to guarantee that the food supply within the country is safe (The US Food and Drug Administration, 2012). The law empowers federal regulator implement measures that prevent contamination of foods. Congress appointed the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the federal body that is in charge of the execution of this law. The law requires FDA to establish standards that govern the safety of food production and harvesting in order to minimize illnesses. The law empowers FDA to hold companies accountable for food contamination.


One of the primary responsibilities of FDA is to conduct inspections on establishments that deal with food production, transportation and storage (The US Food and Drug Administration, 2012). The Food Safety Law requires FDA to ensure that all organization comply with the standards of safety. The law has also enhanced FDA powers to monitor food imports that enter into the country. Close to 15% of the country food supply is imported and, therefore, ensuring the safety of food imports is paramount to the health of the population (The US Food and Drug Administration, 2012). The law empowers FDA to restrict the admission of food imports into the country if the foreign supplier denies this agency the opportunity to inspect their facilities.


Another responsibility that Food Safety Law has assigned to FDA is that of responding to food contamination (The US Food and Drug Administration, 2012). The law has granted FDA the power to recall foods products that are unsafe for human consumption. FDA has the responsibility of conducting investigations and identifying food products that are not fit for consumption. FDA also has a responsibility of establishing partnerships with other agency in order to enhance food safety within the country (The US Food and Drug Administration, 2012). The law requires FDA to establish partnerships with local authorities, other federal agencies, state governments, communities and foreign governments in order to enhance it capacity to protect the health of the American public.
