Skinner’s Walden Two
Introduction
Walden two was written by B.F skinner who was a behavioral psychologist. This novel deals with science fiction and its name Walden two is the name of a community that was used for experimental purposes. In this text, I come up with a description of this science fiction novel.
Walden two
Kuhlmann (2005) notes that Walden Two basically revolves around the dialogue between the two professors, Burris and Castle, and Frazier each concerned on the communities structure as well as design. The Walden Two community is brought out as having about 1000 inhabitants and these inhabitants are generally described as creative, productive as well as happy. It is a rural community that encourages all its inhabitants to develop an experimental approach towards everything whereby every problem detected in the communal setting can have its solution experimentally sought and the findings documented in line with the scientific method. These findings can then be incorporated into their cultural practices in what is referred to as cultural engineering. This science fiction novel debates the importance and significance of a wide range of social conventions of the United States including the significance of modern education, the relevance of professors in the universities, the relevance of an economy in which the government plans etc. In this novel, the community favors a code of conduct on a behaviorism setting and its government is brought out as undemocratic.
Conclusion
Walden two’s has however been branded controversial for its challenge of democracy and other aspects of contemporary social conventions of the United States.
